Jimmy Kimmel repeated Mayor Jacob Frey’s message this week, telling Immigration and Customs Enforcement to leave Minneapolis. The exchange highlights a larger fight over who protects our neighborhoods and how national immigration policy intersects with city politics. Conservatives see this as a dangerous signal that undermines law enforcement and border security, while many on the left frame it as standing up to federal overreach. The line between political theater and public safety policy is clear, and it deserves plain talk.

On air, Kimmel mirrored the mayor by saying, “To ICE, get the f**k out of Minneapolis. Get the f**k out of all these cities.” That blunt language grabbed headlines and set off a predictable debate. But language matters beyond ratings; it changes how citizens and officers perceive the legitimacy of federal agents doing their jobs.

Republicans worry that urging ICE to leave sends the wrong signal to criminals and to victims of crime. When city leaders or high-profile hosts vilify federal law enforcement, it chips away at cooperation between local and federal authorities. That cooperation is often what keeps violent offenders and human traffickers from slipping through the cracks.

There’s also a constitutional angle that gets glossed over in the noise. Immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility, and when cities try to drive out federal agents, it raises questions about who enforces the law. Conservatives argue the solution is better federal action on border security and a coherent national strategy, not theatrics that discourage enforcement on the ground.

Minneapolis has struggled with violent crime trends and community trust in policing, and those realities shape the reaction to ICE’s presence. Instead of pitting agencies against one another, elected officials should be working to improve policing, support victims, and prioritize public safety. Republican voices insist that protecting residents means backing the professionals who arrest dangerous people, not chanting them out of town.

There’s a political theater component to Kimmel’s line too. Late-night hosts know how to stoke outrage and drive clicks, and aligning with a mayor’s soundbite gets attention. Conservatives aren’t calling for a gag on satire or commentary, but they do expect media figures to understand the real-world consequences of demonizing law enforcement.

Another piece of this is policy clarity. If cities want to limit federal activity, they should pass clear laws that can withstand legal scrutiny rather than encouraging harassment or obstruction. Republicans favor rule of law: legislation, court challenges, and robust debate. Messaging that encourages hostility toward federal agents undermines those democratic tools.

There’s also a human cost to consider. ICE agents pursue complex investigations that often take time and coordination, and when cooperation breaks down, it can lead to delays in removing dangerous repeat offenders. Conservative critics point out that protecting the innocent means supporting processes that identify and remove the worst threats, while reform debates proceed through the legislative process.

Political leadership should aim to reduce crime and fix a broken immigration system, not to score points by shouting at federal agents. Republicans argue for stronger borders, clearer enforcement priorities, and support for law enforcement at all levels. That approach, they say, protects communities and respects the separation of powers that keeps our system functioning.

This episode also shows how symbolic language can shift public sentiment and policy priorities quickly. Conservative commentators note that replacing sober policy discussion with viral soundbites distracts from fixing the real problems at the border and in our cities. The push now is to move past headlines and get serious about tangible reforms that restore safety and uphold the rule of law.
