The Kansas City Chiefs opened the 2026 season’s first Monday Night Football matchup by demolishing the Denver Broncos 31-10 at Arrowhead Stadium, and it wasn’t close.
Fans tuned in expecting a story about Patrick Mahomes making his return nine months after tearing his ACL and LCL last December. Mahomes did play well, but Kansas City’s $43 million offseason acquisition, running back Kenneth Walker, took over the night. Fresh off winning Super Bowl LX MVP, Walker put up 191 total yards, 173 rushing and 18 receiving, along with two touchdowns. He outgained Denver’s entire offense by himself.
Denver’s trouble started immediately. On the Broncos’ opening drive, Chiefs rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane intercepted quarterback Bo Nix, and Mahomes turned the turnover into a 15-yard touchdown scramble.
Walker then seized control of the game. Early in the second half, with the Chiefs facing fourth-and-1 at their own 40-yard line, coach Andy Reid kept the offense on the field. Walker took the handoff, found the seam and broke a 60-yard touchdown run. It made him the first Chiefs running back to post over 140 rushing yards and a touchdown in a single game since Kareem Hunt in 2017.
Denver’s offense, under new offensive coordinator Davis Webb, could not get anything going. The unit’s total output for the night didn’t even match Walker’s rushing yards alone. Outside of a first-quarter touchdown pass from Nix to Evan Engram that tied the game at 7-7, Denver punted four straight times before halftime.
The Broncos’ collapse deepened in the third quarter. Trailing 21-7, Denver safety Brandon Jones intercepted Mahomes, setting the offense up with first-and-goal at the Kansas City 5-yard line. Denver couldn’t capitalize. A 10-yard penalty pushed the offense back, and Nix then dropped the snap and fumbled out of bounds near the 16-yard line, forcing a field goal instead of a touchdown.
Nix fumbled again later deep in Broncos territory. Chris Jones recovered it, and the turnover set up a Walker touchdown catch from Mahomes that sealed the game.
Tight end Travis Kelce delivered the night’s other headline moment. He broke off a 59-yard catch-and-run to pass Jason Witten’s career mark of 13,046 receiving yards, moving into second place all-time among tight ends. Kelce now trails only Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez, who holds the record at 15,127 yards. Kelce finished with 71 receiving yards, tops among Chiefs pass-catchers on the night.
Broncos coach Sean Payton watched from the sideline as his new offensive coordinator’s debut fell apart. The result leaves no doubt about who runs the AFC West heading into this season.
