Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) secured a second term Tuesday night, with the Associated Press calling the race in his favor just minutes after polls closed at 8:00 p.m. ET. Early returns showed him dominating Republican nominee Stacy Garrity, 80.8 percent to 18.4 percent, with 7 percent of the vote counted by 8:19 p.m. ET, according to New York Times election data.
The result tracks with where the race stood for weeks. Public polling throughout October never showed Garrity within reach: a Quinnipiac University survey of 1,159 likely voters taken October 1-5 had Shapiro up 25 points, a PennLive poll from October 5-11 put his lead at 30 points, and a Franklin & Marshall poll conducted October 7-18 showed a 23-point edge. All three margins stood well outside any statistical doubt.
Money followed the same pattern. Shapiro entered September with $19.8 million in cash on hand against Garrity’s $1.3 million, according to City and State Pennsylvania.
