The Philadelphia Eagles have placed quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve after doctors found a superficial blood clot in his calf, sidelining him for a minimum of four games.

The team disclosed Thursday that Hurts had been receiving treatment for nearly a week, including during the Eagles’ trip to London, where he played and practiced in full before the diagnosis became clear.

According to the team’s statement, Hurts first sought treatment for calf pain on October 8th, telling medical staff he had been cleated during the October 4th game against the Los Angeles Rams. He practiced in full that Wednesday and Thursday before receiving treatment Friday and being added to the practice report.

“Out of an abundance of caution, an ultrasound was performed on Saturday following the team’s flight to London and walkthrough. The ultrasound revealed a superficial blood clot,” the Eagles said. “Our medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the results and concluded that activity and mobility were important and that Jalen could safely play. Doctors recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the return flight to Philadelphia.”

Hurts played without limitation in the London game, then received treatment Monday and Tuesday and practiced in full Wednesday. The team said it stayed in contact with the league office throughout.

“On Wednesday night, a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the small blood clot. Jalen will be out for Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers as we determine the appropriate course of treatment. His health and safety are our highest priority.”

Blood clots pose a serious medical risk because they can block blood flow to vital organs, potentially causing a pulmonary embolism, stroke or heart attack. Left untreated, they can damage tissue or prove fatal.

Hurts will now miss the game against the Carolina Panthers along with matchups against all three NFC East rivals. He becomes eligible to return in Week 11 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, following the Eagles’ Week 10 bye.

Third-year quarterback Tanner McKee, Philadelphia’s backup, is set to start against the Panthers. McKee has started two career games, with the Eagles winning one and losing the other.

The injury adds to a rough stretch for the struggling Eagles, who have already been without receiver DeVonta Smith and running back Saquon Barkley.
