Israel passed intelligence to the United States alleging Iran plotted a fresh assassination plan targeting President Donald Trump, a disclosure that sharpens the already high-stakes tensions in the region. The report, if accurate, marks a dangerous escalation in Tehran’s long-standing threats linked to the 2020 strike that killed Qassem Soleimani and puts American leadership squarely in Iran’s crosshairs. Washington and Jerusalem are coordinating, but the claim exposes strains in how each country wants to respond. The moment demands clarity and resolve from U.S. leadership and allies.

Intelligence sharing between close partners is exactly what keeps America one step ahead, and the Israeli tip to U.S. officials underlines how seriously allies take threats from Iran. This was not a casual warning; it was presented as actionable intelligence about a renewed plot against a former and potential future U.S. president. Republicans will argue there is no room for complacency when hostile regimes are openly vowing revenge for unilateral actions that defended American lives. That reality should stiffen resolve to protect our leaders and interests abroad.

“They want to take out the U.S. leader — me. I’m on whatever list. I saw this morning I’m on every single one of their lists,” Trump said. “And, so far, I guess I’ve been a bit lucky, but maybe that doesn’t last very long. These are evil, sick people. And we have to root out that cancer. That cancer. You know what you do? You’ve got to cut out cancer early. And that’s the way I feel.”

Those words are blunt and they matter, because they reflect a basic instinct of conservative leadership: confront threats decisively and protect American sovereignty. Iran’s regime has publicly promised retaliation for Soleimani’s death going back years, and chants and banners at Iranian gatherings have telegraphed a willingness to carry out violent reprisals. When state actors openly endorse assassination, the only prudent policy is deterrence backed by credible force and intelligence. That includes tighter security for high-profile American officials wherever threats appear.

The revelation comes amid a recent divergence over tactics between President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with Netanyahu urging continued military pressure while Trump has signaled interest in preserving a fragile ceasefire after U.S. strikes. Strategic disagreements among allies are normal, but they must not become excuses for paralysis. Republican voices will press for coordinated pressure that stops Iran’s nuclear ambitions and its terror proxies without giving Tehran room to rebuild or escalate unchecked.

Coordination already continued at high levels, with leaders discussing recent Gulf activity and bilateral planning. That kind of communication matters because intelligence can be ephemeral—credible only if acted upon swiftly and intelligently. U.S. policymakers should prioritize rapid sharing, layered defenses, and contingency plans so a threat does not materialize into tragedy. A robust posture signals to Tehran that assassination plots are not tolerated and will be met with unified consequences.

Iran’s history of sponsoring violence across the region makes this alert especially worrying. From proxy attacks to cyber operations, Tehran has long used deniable methods to exert influence and inflict harm, and Americans know too well the cost of underestimating such a regime. Conservatives argue that decisive measures—strengthened sanctions, targeted strikes when warranted, and relentless intelligence operations—are the only reliable path to protecting American lives and deterring future plots. Soft approaches have not worked in the past.

Domestic politics aside, protecting the commander in chief is nonpartisan in practice but partisan in approach; Republicans will favor a posture that combines vigilance with the readiness to act. The intelligence disclosure should prompt Congress and the administration to demand clear briefings, authorize necessary protections, and ensure that any coordination with allies is robust and unambiguous. When a foreign power crosses a line and targets American leaders, the response must be firm, swift, and unmistakable.
