Zach Lahn pulled off a surprise win in Iowa’s GOP gubernatorial primary, defeating Rep. Randy Feenstra and clinching the Republican nod to face Democrat Rob Sand this November. The upset came despite Feenstra’s higher profile, strong fundraising and a late endorsement from President Trump. With the governorship open after Gov. Kim Reynolds opted not to run, the outcome reshapes the fall fight for Iowa.

Lahn ran as an outsider, pitching an “Iowa First” message that connected with voters in rural and small-town precincts. A father, farmer and businessman by description, he drew support from MAHA-aligned backers and presented himself as someone who would prioritize local agriculture and industry. That outsider energy proved decisive on primary night.

In the crowded Republican field Lahn outpaced several better-known names, including former state Rep. Brad Sherman, former state agency director Adam Steen and state Rep. Eddie Andrews. Feenstra, who represents Iowa’s 4th Congressional District, had been viewed as the frontrunner for much of the race. Voters instead picked the grassroots pitch, handing Lahn the victory that sends him to the general election.

Feenstra carried significant advantages coming into Election Day: a congressional profile, ample fundraising, and endorsements from prominent Iowa conservatives including one-time allies in state leadership. Most notable was President Trump’s late backing, calling Feenstra “MAGA all the way” and giving him his “Complete and Total Endorsement.” Even with that high-profile support, the race tightened and ultimately slipped away.

The margin was narrow. Shortly after midnight Eastern Time, with 99% of the votes counted, Lahn held roughly a 1,600-vote lead over Feenstra in a result that flipped expectations and underscored how competitive intra-party contests can be. A close finish like that means turnout patterns and late-count dynamics mattered more than name recognition. It also signals that Iowa Republicans will need to unify quickly ahead of November.

<p”I just called Zach Lahn, and said, ‘Hey, you got to carry this torch. We got to keep this state red. You got to make sure you beat Rob Sand.’ And I’m all in to help him out,” Feenstra told supporters at his election night gathering, according to a video recording shared by Iowas News Now reporter Skylar Tallal. The concession line reflected a willingness to back the nominee and avoid a bruising intra-party fight before the general. That tone matters as the fall campaign begins.

Lahn’s MAHA ties and outsider posture set him apart from the more establishment wing of the party, and his “Iowa First” branding leaned into agricultural and energy priorities that matter to state voters. He campaigned on securing borders, supporting farmers and keeping taxes competitive for family businesses. Those themes played well across many rural counties that decided the nomination.

With Reynolds stepping aside and Republicans in control of the governor’s office since 2011, this open-seat contest quickly attracted attention beyond state lines. Lahn will now face State Auditor Rob Sand, Iowa’s lone Democrat in statewide office, who advanced without opposition in his primary and has built his profile on government accountability and anti-corruption work. Early ratings have tightened, with at least one national tracker moving the race to a toss-up, so the general election promises to be competitive.

The result is a test of party unity and messaging heading into November, and Iowa Republicans now face a clear choice: rally behind Lahn to defend the governor’s mansion or risk allowing divisions to hand the opportunity to Rob Sand. The stakes are straightforward and high for conservatives across the state, and every campaign move between now and Election Day will matter.
