Instagram has rolled out a new paid tier called Instagram Plus, charging users $3.99 a month for a set of tools that let them monitor who is watching their content — and hide their own viewing habits from others.
Meta is marketing the subscription as a way to “help you express yourself, connect deeper with friends, and customize your experience in new ways.” The features tell a different story.
Subscribers get extended story visibility, with posts staying up longer than the standard 24 hours and getting pushed higher in followers’ feeds. There are also “expressive reactions” for direct messages, billed as a way to show “extra support.”
The more controversial additions are surveillance tools dressed up as engagement features. A new Story Rewatch Count shows how many times someone has replayed a user’s story. The Search Viewer Sheet lets a user quickly check whether a specific person viewed their post. Story Preview lets a user look at someone else’s story without showing up on that person’s viewer list.
Instagram Plus also lets subscribers post to their profile or story highlights without the content appearing in friends’ feeds, and lets them preview others’ stories in secret — though doing so blocks them from seeing who watched their own content in return.
None of this is visible to non-paying users. People without the subscription have no way of knowing who else has it, or that their own viewing patterns — timestamps, rewatches, repeat visits — are being logged and served up to whoever paid for the privilege.
Users are calling it out
The reaction online has been blunt. One Reddit user wrote:
“If what you love is the ability to more conveniently keep tabs on crushes or enemies—by which I mean torture yourself—then Instagram nailed it.”
TikTok creator @suhaadada ran what she called a “social experiment” using the new features and said it left her “ready to never use Instagram again.” She singled out the Story Rewatch insight, which flags a glyph next to a viewer’s name if they replay a story.
“This could be someone swiping through at a fast glimpse and seeing something that interested them enough to go back. It tries to manipulate you into thinking that a viewer rewatch means more than what it actually is.”
She also flagged the timestamp feature, which updates each time a viewer returns to rewatch a story.
“At the expense of your own mental health as you start to wonder why someone is jumping to the top of your viewer list so much.”
She noted that because non-subscribers can’t see who has Instagram Plus, paying users are effectively buying access to behavioral data on everyone else that “should be kept private.”
Other commenters were equally direct. “If you have Instagram plus stay away from me,” one wrote. Another predicted the subscription is a first step toward Meta charging for baseline access across its platforms: “Meta is slowly killing what used to be good.”
