The Justice Department has filed a criminal complaint against a Venezuelan national accused of attacking a federal agent, wrenching a service weapon free, and resisting arrest outside a business in Utica, Michigan, after a Homeland Security Task Force surveillance operation spotted suspected undocumented workers. The incident escalated from a traffic stop into a foot chase and a violent confrontation that left two agents injured and the suspect facing federal charges. The case comes amid a bitter political fight over DHS funding and immigration enforcement, underscoring concerns about border security and officer safety.

Agents with the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Task Force were watching a delivery location after tips suggested people working there were in the country illegally. They traced a vehicle to Arnoldo Jose Marquez-Pulido, 33, and after identifying immigration issues, moved to stop the car. What began as a routine enforcement stop quickly turned dangerous when the driver fled at high speed.

Marquez-Pulido reportedly returned to the business and ran for cover, ignoring commands to halt before an agent tackled him near the entrance. During the scuffle, officers say he struck an agent in the face with his elbow and reached for the agent’s service pistol. Prosecutors allege he was able to remove the firearm from the holster and briefly wield a “Glock 19” before losing control of it as the agent fought back.

Additional officers arrived, recovered the weapon from the ground, and restrained Marquez-Pulido after continued resistance. The primary agent suffered a contusion to his elbow, abrasions to his knees and hands, and a contusion to his cheek, while a second agent sustained a knee contusion. Both received hospital treatment and were released, according to federal authorities handling the complaint.

Federal prosecutors say Marquez-Pulido is believed to have entered the United States at the San Ysidro port of entry in 2024 without proper documentation. He was scheduled for an initial federal court appearance in Detroit, and prosecutors indicated they will ask that he be held pending further proceedings. A criminal complaint remains an allegation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty at trial.

U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon of the Eastern District of Michigan framed the case in stark terms, saying “Some say that enforcing our nation’s immigration laws is unfair because illegal aliens are all harmless.” He added a blunt rebuttal that echoes a law-and-order viewpoint familiar to those pressing for tougher border controls.

“High speed flight from arrest, fighting federal agents, and grabbing an agent’s gun are not ‘harmless,'” he added. “And what’s ‘unfair’ is the fact that Americans pay the price for dangerous illegal aliens.” Those remarks underline a broader Republican argument that stricter enforcement and full funding for immigration agencies are essential to protect officers and citizens alike.

The episode lands amid an intense Senate standoff over a DHS funding package, where immigration enforcement remains a key divide. Republicans pushing for robust border and ICE authority argue that excluding immigration from agency funding would leave officers and communities exposed. Democrats have debated carving out parts of DHS funding, which critics say undermines the ability to enforce laws and respond to border threats.

Officials at DHS and ICE have reported a spike in assaults on their officers and have vowed to pursue charges in violent encounters. This complaint joins a string of cases used to press the point that without clear enforcement and proper resources, agents face escalating risks on routine assignments. The legal process will now play out in federal court while the political fight over DHS money continues on Capitol Hill.
