The Homeland Security secretary is touting a vigorous enforcement push as Immigration and Customs Enforcement continues arresting criminal illegal immigrants across the country, even as sanctuary politicians and vocal agitators try to block cooperation with federal authorities. The department highlights hundreds of thousands of removals and recent arrests for serious crimes, while critics argue some picked up do not have U.S. convictions. This story follows arrests, named suspects, and a public clash over how enforcement is handled and reported.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem made a forceful statement defending the administration’s focus on public safety and border control. “In one year, President [Donald] Trump has made great strides, delivering on the mandate from the American people to remove the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens from our streets despite the complete lack of cooperation from sanctuary politicians and agitators who attempt to obstruct law enforcement — a felony and a federal crime,” Noem wrote. That line frames the policy as responding directly to voter demand for tougher enforcement.

Department numbers are being used to underline the argument for strict action at the border and inside the country. DHS officials reported more than 670,000 removals in the past year, listing murderers, pedophiles, rapists, gang members and terrorists among those taken out of circulation. The department also points to an uptick in voluntary departures and says those numbers show deterrence is working.

“Just yesterday, ICE arrested pedophiles, domestic abusers and drug traffickers,” Noem wrote, and the administration is using these arrests as proof that enforcement targets violent and repeat offenders. Recent enforcement waves included people convicted of indecent liberties with a child, domestic violence and distribution of cocaine. Those specific cases are being held up as examples of the kinds of threats federal agents are removing from communities.

Officials named several arrested individuals along with their prior convictions to make the point concrete. Uriel Hernandez-Betancourt, described as a criminal illegal immigrant from Mexico, was arrested and had a previous conviction for indecent liberties with a child in Moore County, North Carolina. Parede Zuniga, identified as from Guatemala, was taken into custody and had a prior conviction for distribution of cocaine in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Other examples cited include repeat offenders with histories that span states and offenses. Lucio Valdovinos, said to be from Mexico, reportedly had a domestic violence conviction in Los Angeles plus multiple DUI and disorderly conduct convictions across California. Lorenzo Aviles-Macedo was described as having been convicted of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse and driving under the influence in Los Angeles.

> Of the 30% of illegal immigrants arrested by ICE who did not have criminal convictions or pending criminal charges in the U.S., DHS said it is unclear how many were wanted for crimes in their country of origin, other countries or by the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL).

The department defends its approach with a statistic aimed at quieting critics: DHS told reporters that 70% of illegal immigrants arrested by ICE had criminal convictions or pending charges in the U.S. That figure is cited by Republicans as validation that enforcement is focused where it matters most, on those who pose a danger to communities.

Not everyone accepts the picture DHS paints, and a recent television appearance highlighted that split. During a recent appearance on Fox News’ “Special Report”, however, Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., alleged records show 75% of migrants arrested by ICE in Virginia have no criminal record. “They may have come across illegally into our country, but 75% of the people to have been arrested have no further criminal record,” Warner said. “Let’s potentially work on those who have criminal records, but that is different than what’s happening right now, and the Biden administration screwed up the border, I’ll be the first to acknowledge that, but the idea of masked ICE agents picking up moms dropping off their kids, folks going to work and, as we’ve seen at least in the circumstance in Minnesota, sometimes where kids are being left in the car after their parents that may or may not have been actually criminals are being picked up.”
