Federal officers in Minneapolis faced aggressive, coordinated protests after an ICE operation ended with the fatal shooting of a demonstrator who investigators say tried to run over an agent. Videos showed crowds surrounding vehicles, hurling objects, and shouting death threats while officials described a surge in vehicle attacks and threats against agents as they carried out civil immigration enforcement.

The scene in Minneapolis quickly turned chaotic as protesters swarmed federal vehicles and taunted officers. Several clips show people throwing snowballs at law enforcement and chanting “ICE out now,” creating dangerous conditions for officers trying to move through tight city streets.

Some footage captured threats aimed directly at individual agents, including graphic, violent language shouted at law enforcement. One protester outside the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building was recorded screaming, “We’re going to f—ing find you, and we’re going to f—ing kill you! You’re going to f—ing die, b–ch!” which underscores how hostile and personal many confrontations have become.

Federal officials say those hostile encounters are not isolated outbursts but part of an organized pattern of resistance to civil immigration work. Department of Homeland Security officials described the participants as “left-wing agitators” and pointed to multiple incidents where vehicles were deliberately used against agents, a tactic DHS condemned as turning cars into weapons.

DHS further warned about a spike in threats faced by its personnel, quoting an “8000 percent increase in death threats” alongside repeated attempts to ram law enforcement vehicles. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told reporters that the agency is witnessing a coordinated campaign of violence against federal officers, particularly in Minneapolis, and that these are real operational hazards teams now have to plan around.

At the center of the confrontation was a large enforcement action that drew the ire of demonstrators: a 2,000-strong team deployed to the Twin Cities to investigate alleged fraud and carry out deportations. Federal authorities say one protester, later identified as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, tried to run over ICE agents and was fatally shot by an officer who believed his life and others’ were at risk.

Officials framed that shooting as the tragic result of defensive action in the face of an imminent threat. “This appears to be an attempt to kill or to cause bodily harm to agents, an act of domestic terrorism,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said at a news conference, adding that the officer “used his training to save his own life and that of his colleagues.”

Videos also show more routine, but still hostile, clashes at the periphery: protesters hitting officials with signs, shoving, and swearing directly at agents as arrests and crowd-control moves unfold. In one exchange, an agent calmly told a confrontational protester that federal law enforcement was conducting “Title 8 enforcement, ma’am,” highlighting that these were civil immigration actions rather than criminal arrests in many cases.

The department has responded publicly, posting that “dangerous criminals – whether they be illegal aliens or U.S. citizens – are turning their vehicles into weapons to attack ICE.” DHS added that “The brave men and women of DHS law enforcement will not be deterred and will continue arresting the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens,” stressing that enforcement will continue despite the rising threats.

For Republicans and supporters of federal law enforcement, the images from Minneapolis strike a familiar chord: law officers doing difficult jobs under ferocious public pressure and targeted hostility. The message from leadership is straightforward and firm—agents will keep doing their duty, and violent interference with enforcement operations will be treated as a serious, and sometimes deadly, threat to public safety.
