ICE arrested an illegal alien who was working as a Hanover Park police officer, complete with badge, gun, and a pension.

Radule Bojovic, a Montenegrin national who was supposed to leave the U.S. in 2015, was arrested this week by federal immigration agents after they discovered he’d been patrolling the streets of Hanover Park, Illinois, in full uniform. Let that sink in. The guy was literally enforcing U.S. law while actively breaking it. And for nearly 10 years? Crickets from the state.

The arrest raises immediate questions about hiring, vetting, and whether proper identity checks were skipped or somehow failed. Residents deserve clear answers and swift action from both local leaders and federal authorities.

This case underlines a bigger failure from our borders to hiring desks, and we should be blunt about it. If someone without lawful status can carry a badge and a gun, that is a problem for public safety, plain and simple. Republicans who care about law and order should push for checks that close loopholes and keep sworn officers fully accountable.

Police departments are supposed to run thorough background investigations, verify identity, and confirm legal eligibility before hiring anyone into uniformed roles. When those safeguards fail we get embarrassing headlines and worse, a real hit to trust between officers and the communities they protect. Local leaders should release a timeline of the hire, the checks performed, and any gaps found during the process.

Another angle that demands scrutiny is the pension and benefits angle, because taxpayer-funded pensions should have eligibility rules. If someone was collecting or accruing pension credits while lacking lawful immigration status taxpayers deserve clarity on whether those payments are valid. The village must explain how benefits were handled and outline steps to recover funds if rules were broken.

This case also shows the need for better data sharing between federal immigration authorities and local police hiring offices. If alerts about unauthorized status existed, why were they missed, and what technology or policy changes will prevent a repeat? Local departments should be able to tap reliable federal checks without politics getting in the way.

Practical fixes exist, like mandatory identity verification and routine E-Verify checks for any agency that arms staff or grants police powers. These steps are not radical, they are commonsense measures to ensure the people wearing badges meet legal standards. Republican lawmakers should lead on this and push for clear statutes that make eligibility non-negotiable.

For rank-and-file officers who follow the rules, this news hits morale and shakes public confidence in the badge. Communities expect their police to be accountable and to answer tough questions without excuses. Transparency from Hanover Park officials will matter far more than spin or silence.

ICE stepping in to make this arrest shows federal enforcement is still active, even when local gaps exist. That is good, but it’s not a substitute for local responsibility and stronger preventive hiring systems. Coordination has to be routine, not a crisis response after problems hit the headlines.

Audit the hiring files, freeze questionable benefits, and let independent auditors review the records to restore confidence. Those steps are straightforward and they protect both taxpayers and honest officers who play by the rules. Weaknesses exposed here must lead to fixes, not excuses.

Voters, taxpayers, and responsible officials should demand a clear path forward so this never becomes a repeat story in another town. Keep pressure on local leaders to fix hiring and benefits rules and to safeguard the badge people place their trust in. Law and common sense should guide the next steps, not spin or political convenience.
