U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer meets with House Republicans on Wednesday as President Trump’s trade war with Canada escalates and starts to divide his own party.
Greer is attending the Republican Study Committee’s weekly lunch this week, according to a source familiar with the planning who spoke to Fox News Digital. Two additional sources told Fox News Digital they expect lawmakers to raise Trump’s trade fight with Canada during the meeting. It is not clear whether the questions will amount to friendly oversight or open pushback.
The meeting comes as tensions between Washington and Ottawa reach a new high. Trump accused Ontario of ripping off American businesses in a Truth Social post Sunday, writing that Canada wants “to be treated like a state, but they aren’t one.”
“They’ve been ripping us off for decades, and it’s going to stop,” Trump wrote.
The U.S. slapped a 50% tariff on a range of Canadian goods in late July, and the duties took effect earlier this month. Canada hit back with tariffs of up to 50% on U.S. imports.
Trump further inflamed the dispute by signing an executive order renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”
The trade war has already split House Republicans once. In February, the House passed a bill aimed at reversing Trump’s earlier Canada tariffs, with six Republicans joining most Democrats in support. Only one Democrat, Rep. Jared Golden of Maine, voted against it.
Wednesday’s meeting will show whether that GOP unease has grown as the tariff fight has intensified.
