The top Minnesota Republican in Congress is demanding answers and accountability as investigators dig into a widening social services fraud probe that federal officials say could involve massive sums of taxpayer money. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer is pressing for prosecutions and clarity while Governor Tim Walz accepts responsibility but disputes the scale of alleged losses. The case centers on a convicted nonprofit and growing inquiries into multiple state programs.

Tom Emmer has been blunt about what he expects from investigators and officials in Minnesota. “I think as they start to peel this onion back, which just seems to be getting deeper and deeper and broader and broader, whoever was responsible needs to be held accountable,” he said. Republicans in Washington are watching closely and pushing for straightforward answers rather than spin.

Federal prosecutors have said the misconduct may stretch back to 2018 and involve far larger sums than first reported. Investigations and reporting have highlighted a scheme that stole millions from program funds and led to charges centered on a Minnesota nonprofit. Feeding Our Future became a focal point after authorities said more than $240 million was taken from the Federal Child Nutrition Program, and its founder, Aimee Bock, was found guilty on multiple fraud counts.

“This thing is mushrooming into a much bigger fraud issue spanning over several different programs and potentially different jurisdictions,” Emmer said. “As this thing mushrooms, number one, let’s make sure we hold the people accountable. I will tell you what I believe. My personal opinion is there is no way that a billion dollars-plus got its way out of the Walz administration without someone in the administration being aware and/or complicit.”

Investigators have widened their scope beyond a single nonprofit, and Republican lawmakers want subpoenas and documents to follow. “I would put it this way — everyone is entitled to due process, and we need all the facts. But if someone knowingly and willingly allowed people to steal the taxpayers’ money and send it back to terrorists in Somalia, they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” Emmer said.

There is now a clear split between federal prosecutors and state officials over how big the problem is and how it happened. Emmer has cautioned that questions about oversight, management, and possible complicity need to be answered at the highest levels. “That’s what we need to find out — how high does that go? According to our U.S. attorney, it goes to the highest level of Minnesota government. He didn’t use names, but I know what the highest level is. We’ll see.”

“Let’s see the proof,” Emmer added, pressing for evidence rather than assertions. That demand for documentation is central to the GOP approach: follow the paper trail, hold people accountable, and let prosecutors do their jobs. Republicans will argue the public deserves a full, transparent accounting of how federal dollars were handled and who failed to stop abuse.

Governor Tim Walz has publicly acknowledged responsibility for what happened on his watch while disputing the scale of the alleged fraud. “This is on my watch. I am accountable for this. And more importantly, I am the one that will fix it.” He also pushed back on big dollar estimates without detailed proof. “You should be equally outraged about $1 or whatever that number is, but they’re using that number without the proof behind it,” Walz said. “But to extrapolate what that number is for sensationalism, or to make statements about it, it doesn’t really help us.”

The immediate Republican line is simple: do the investigations, produce the records, and prosecute anyone who knowingly stole taxpayer funds. Lawmakers in Washington will be watching whether state officials cooperate and whether reforms follow, but right now the focus is on getting facts on the table and ensuring justice is done. The political stakes in Minnesota are high, and accountability will be the central demand coming from the GOP.
