The House Ethics Committee has opened an investigation into Rep. Eric Swalwell amid multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, his campaign for governor is suspended, and Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna is pushing to expel him if he does not step down, while a Swalwell spokesperson has not responded to requests for comment.

The story moved fast once allegations surfaced that at least four women had accused the California Democrat of sexual misconduct. That kind of number raises questions about pattern and oversight, and it demands a swift, transparent response from the House. Voters and colleagues deserve clarity rather than delays or dismissals.

Monday’s announcement from the House Ethics Committee confirmed they are looking into an allegation “that he may have engaged in sexual misconduct toward an employee working under his supervision.” Those exact words matter, and the committee’s role is to examine them carefully and objectively. An ethics probe is a serious institutional tool meant to get to the facts.

Swalwell’s decision to suspend his gubernatorial campaign came after the allegations drew public attention and backlash over the weekend. Suspending a bid for higher office is an acknowledgment that the situation is untenable politically, whether or not legal consequences follow. Campaigns depend on public trust, and trust evaporates when credibility is in question.

On the Hill, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna announced plans to introduce an expulsion resolution if Swalwell does not resign, putting real pressure on the Democrat to make a decision. Expulsion is rare and extreme, reserved for conduct that undermines the institution’s integrity. Luna’s move reflects a broader demand for accountability across party lines.

Critically, some Democrats have reportedly signaled they might back the expulsion measure, which shows this is not just a partisan crusade but a matter of institutional standards. When colleagues from the same party express willingness to support removal, it underscores the gravity of the allegations. That kind of cross-cutting concern pushes the process forward and prevents it from being dismissed as mere politics.

A spokesperson for Swalwell did not immediately respond to a request for comment, leaving unanswered questions about how he plans to address the allegations and the ethics review. Silence at this moment only fuels speculation and frustration among voters and staffers. Public officials have a responsibility to communicate, cooperate with investigations, and protect the people who work for them.

The Ethics Committee’s role will be to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and determine whether House rules were violated. That process should be thorough but not endless; dragging it out benefits no one and erodes confidence in accountability mechanisms. Members of Congress must be held to the same standards they expect of others.

From a Republican standpoint, this situation highlights the need for clear consequences when misconduct is alleged, regardless of party labels or political convenience. Institutions that tolerate or ignore questionable behavior invite cynicism and erode public faith in government. Republicans pressing for a full, transparent review are signaling that standards matter more than partisan cover.

For staffers and employees who work in congressional offices, the investigation is also about ensuring safe workplaces where abuse of power is not tolerated. Supervisors must be accountable for their behavior, and complaint procedures should be accessible and effective. Protecting employees is not a partisan issue; it is a basic requirement of being in public service.

The coming days will show whether the Ethics Committee can move efficiently and whether Swalwell will cooperate or continue to withhold substantive answers. If Democrats are willing to support an expulsion measure, the pressure on him will intensify and the House will have to weigh institutional integrity against political calculus. What happens next will set a tone for how similar cases are handled in the future.
