Harold Greene, the longtime ABC7 news anchor who delivered the day’s biggest stories to Southern California households for decades, died Tuesday night at age 82.

His daughter, Courtney Greene, announced the death in a statement. “It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Harold passed away last night. My mom and I were by his side, and there was an extraordinary amount of love in the room,” she said.

“We have a feeling he’s already settling into the great newsroom in the sky, no doubt with a few suggestions on how things should be run. He was so very loved, and we know he will be missed by many.”

Greene’s career in local news began in 1970, when he joined ABC7 as a producer and reporter. He later worked at stations in San Diego and San Francisco before returning to ABC7 in 1982. From there he anchored the station’s 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts until 2000, becoming one of the most recognizable faces on Los Angeles television.

After leaving ABC7, Greene continued working in the LA market at KCBS-TV and KCAL-TV before retiring in 2008.

Over his career, Greene won multiple Emmy Awards along with Golden Mike and Edward R. Murrow honors, and he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

No cause of death was released. Greene’s wife asked that people celebrate his life by sharing pictures and memories, and said a memorial service will be held after the holidays.

Greene’s death comes two years after another prominent Los Angeles anchor, Chauncy Glover of KCAL News, died at age 39 in November 2024. Glover, a three-time Emmy winner, was later found to have died from acute intoxication, ruled an accidental death.
