A grocery store worker in Massachusetts treated patrons to a special Christmas gift: his beautiful singing voice.
The viral video shows Gilly Assuncao, a 23-year-old Brazilian native, singing Christmas carols at a Russo’s in Watertown, Massachusetts.
In the now viral video, Assuncao sings amongst the store’s flower display while customers listen.
Karen Russo, the daughter of the grocery store’s owner, says her father usually hires a musical act to perform during the holidays. When the musician came to sound check, Assuncao helped and began to sing.
Christina Russo, the owner’s other daughter, said:
I hear this incredible operatic sound coming from the greenhouse. I kept walking closer and I thought it was definitely some kind of tape recording. Then I saw it was Gilly standing there with a microphone. I thought, ‘Oh he must be lip syncing.’ I thought this was a joke.
All this opera is wafting in and out of the store and I’m convinced this is all a big joke, but I proceeded to just have my mind blown. I could not believe this was happening.
Needless to say, Assuncao landed the gig.
Assuncao told the local ABC station that he used to be a professional singer when he lived in Brazil. However, he stopped performing after relocating to the United States. He currently studies computers and took a job at Russo’s to help make ends meet. He dreams of studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, but he is trying to stay realistic.
Assuncao said in a local interview:
It doesn’t matter if I sing for 10 people or 10,000. I always get nervous. I’ve always dreamed of being a professional musician, but I’ve always kept my feet on the ground about it because I know it’s a really hard path to follow.
I honestly was not expecting that at all. I just thought it was going to be a cool performance here in the store. I love singing and was really excited, but I didn’t expect this at all.
