The House hearing turned into a blunt showdown over the Southern Poverty Law Center’s decision to list mainstream conservative groups as extremists, with Republicans demanding answers and the SPLC refusing to back down. Lawmakers zeroed in on Turning Point USA’s placement on the center’s 2025 “Year in Hate & Extremism” list and on charges that the nonprofit misled donors while cozying up to the administration. Tension rose as the Justice Department’s indictment and questions about bias framed every exchange.

At the hearing, Rep. Darrell Issa drove straight at the heart of the matter, asking the SPLC chief whether he would withdraw the designation. Issa pressed with a pointed line: “Will you recant it, or are you going to double down and say that these people, including the martyred Charlie Kirk, in fact, somehow deserve to be on your hate list?” The back-and-forth got tight when Fair replied, “Congressman, as I said in my statement,” and Issa cut him off demanding a yes or no answer.

Republicans kept the pressure on for clarity and accountability rather than evasions or legal caveats. When Rep. Chip Roy took his turn, Fair defended the decision in stark terms, saying, “It is our position that TPUSA expresses views and vilifies other people based on immutable characteristics, exposing them to our listing.” Roy signaled immediate policy consequences, saying he would push legislation aimed at stripping the organization’s tax-exempt status for what he called persistent abuse of that privilege.

The hearing unfolded against a broader backdrop: federal prosecutors filed an 11-count indictment accusing the SPLC of concealing payments to informants while presenting itself as the nation’s leading anti-hate watchdog. Lawmakers repeatedly tied that indictment to concerns over how the center compiles its lists and whether donors were misled. Fair denied wrongdoing and argued the charges are politically motivated, but Republicans said the indictment only deepened the need for scrutiny.

Turning Point’s team wasted no time responding to the label and to Fair’s testimony, using social media to turn the moment into a rallying cry. Spokesman Andrew Kolvet posted a terse reply that captured the group’s posture: “Badge of honor,” Kolvet wrote. “Screw the SPLC.” That reaction underlined how the designation has been used as a fundraising and recruitment tool for conservative groups rather than a quiet correction.

The partisan split in the room was unmistakable, with Democrats moving quickly to defend the SPLC’s record and credibility. Ranking Member Rep. Jamie Raskin framed the center as a public good in his opening remarks, saying, “The SPLC is an enduring institutional beacon of hope for millions of people seeking to create a more perfect union.” His defense leaned on the group’s long history even as Republicans cataloged recent controversies and alleged missteps.

Fair tried to push back on accusations that the organization had lost its way, telling lawmakers, “Some say we’ve lost our way,” and insisting, “That’s false. We’ve never lost our North Star: a fair and just society for every person. All our programs advance that mission.” Still, Republicans pressed him on specifics, including whether the SPLC has labeled certain anti-Israel or Islamist groups as extremist, and noted the apparent pattern of targeting conservative groups while missing other actors who traffic in hate.

The hearing left one thing clear: the fight over who gets to define extremism is now a political front. Republicans signaled they will pursue legislative fixes and oversight, and several members vowed to hold the SPLC to a stricter standard of transparency. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle used the testimony to sharpen their messages heading into next steps, and the SPLC’s response suggested it intends to defend both its methods and its mission regardless of the fallout.
