Georgia is the new No. 1 team in the country after beating Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and the Week 6 AP Top 25 poll shows just how much Saturday’s upsets reshaped the season.
The Bulldogs’ win over Alabama was widely seen as the most impressive result of the season so far, and voters rewarded Kirby Smart’s team with the top spot. Texas, which had held the No. 1 ranking since Week 2, dropped six spots after being stunned by unranked Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl.
The biggest jump in the poll belonged to Kentucky, which went from unranked to No. 15 after beating LSU in overtime. LSU, coached by Lane Kiffin, fell 12 spots to No. 22 after the loss dropped the Tigers to 4-2 on the year.
Three teams entered the rankings for the first time this season: Northwestern, Wake Forest and Kentucky. Two others fell out entirely. Oregon dropped off after a home loss to UCLA, and Florida exited after getting blown out at home by South Carolina. Both the Ducks and the Gators had been ranked in the Top 16 just a week earlier.
Alabama, despite suffering its first loss of the season, stayed put at No. 6, a sign that voters still view the Crimson Tide as one of the nation’s best teams even after falling to Georgia.
Notre Dame moved up to No. 2 and will face its first real test of the season in Week 7, traveling to take on No. 8 BYU.
What’s Next in Week 7
The coming weekend is loaded with ranked matchups:
- No. 4 Ohio State at No. 5 Indiana
- No. 9 Ole Miss hosts No. 13 Missouri
- No. 6 Alabama at No. 14 Tennessee
- No. 15 Kentucky at Oklahoma
- No. 22 LSU hosts No. 16 Mississippi State
- No. 20 Houston hosts No. 18 Oklahoma State
With that many ranked teams squaring off, another round of upheaval in the rankings looks all but certain.
