Despite the departure of Tucker Carlson, Fox News has maintained its place as the highest-rated cable news network in terms of viewership. Even though cable news may not be as popular now compared to its heyday, Fox News remains at the forefront when it comes to ratings.

In April 2023, when Tucker Carlson left Fox News’ 8 p.m. slot, there was a slight dip in viewership; however, it quickly recovered and continues to be one of the most watched primetime slots for cable news today.

Jesse Watters has taken over Tucker’s slot and his new show, “Jesse Watters Primetime”, is regularly outperforming its rivals, although not to the same level of success.

Fox News recently announced that Rupert Murdoch would be stepping down from his role as chairman to become a chairman emeritus after the News Corp’s annual meeting in November. His son, Lachlan Murdoch, will then take over as the new chairman and executive chairman/CEO of Fox.

Fox is navigating a period of transformation during an opportune moment, as the United States prepares for the 2024 presidential election and debates about President Biden’s son, Trump’s indictments, Ukraine, foreign involvements and domestic inflation rage on.

And the cable news channel thinks it has the perfect antidote to reinvigorating the excitement around politics and news gathering.

Fox news announces historic event

On September 25th, Fox announced that it will be hosting the inaugural debate between Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom. This “red vs. blue state debate” is seen as a precursor to the 2024 election, as DeSantis has already declared his candidacy. Additionally, there has been an increasing amount of demand for President Biden to make way for a younger candidate, this pressure is becoming more intense on a weekly basis.

Newsom, for his part, says he won’t run against Biden.

The debate will take place on Nov. 30 and run for approximately 90 minutes in Georgia. Sean Hannity, Fox’s 9 p.m. anchor and host of “Hannity,” will moderate.

“I’m looking forward to providing viewers with an informative debate about the everyday issues and governing philosophies that impact the lives of every American,” Hannity said of the upcoming debate.

Newsom agreed to a potential debate between himself and DeSantis in July following calls by Hannity and others to reinvigorate debate and bring alternative voices into the ring ahead of the election.

DeSantis was quick to agree shortly thereafter.

“Let’s get it done. Just tell me when and where — we’ll do it,” he said.

The debate is the first of its kind for the network where two sitting governors will meet and discuss a variety of issues.

Fox Business will also host the second upcoming primary debate between the remaining GOP candidates in Simi Valley, Calif., on Sept. 27, from 9 p.m.-11 p.m. Eastern time.
