David Beamer, father of Flight 93 passenger Todd Beamer, is telling Michigan voters to “vote American this time,” framing the state’s Senate race as a fight against what he calls domestic threats to the country’s foundations.
Speaking Tuesday on “America’s Newsroom,” Beamer endorsed Republican Mike Rogers over Democratic candidate Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, arguing that Democratic socialists represent a danger comparable to the terrorists his son confronted on September 11, 2001.
“These Democratic socialists are really more closely aligned with domestic terrorists than with our way of life,” Beamer said.
He added that the modern-day conflict is being waged differently than the attacks of 2001. “The good news is, their weapon of choice is not a bomb or turning an airplane into a guided missile. Their weapon of choice is a ballot,” Beamer said.
Todd Beamer was one of the passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 93 who rushed the cockpit to stop hijackers from reaching their target in Washington, D.C. The plane crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing everyone on board, but the passengers’ actions are credited with preventing a fourth attack on the capital.
David Beamer, a Michigan voter, threw his support behind Rogers directly.
“I’m going to vote against those that want to destroy America. I’m going to vote for an American, a real Michigan man. His name happens to be Mike Rogers. I want everybody across all the platforms, Democrat, independent, Republican, vote American this time. Don’t vote for those who are set about to destroy our freedoms,” Beamer said.
The endorsement comes as Rogers’ campaign has hammered El-Sayed over resurfaced, now-deleted social media posts about the 9/11 attacks. In a 2021 post first reported by the Washington Free Beacon, El-Sayed wrote: “Today, I mourn the 3K lives, 6K injuries, & infrastructural devastation in NYC, perpetuated ignorantly in the name of my faith. Tomorrow, I’ll mourn ~1M lives, millions of injuries, & infrastructural devastation in 3 countries, perpetuated ignorantly in the name of my country.”
Beamer drew a direct line between the surprise nature of the 9/11 attacks and what he sees as an ongoing, unseen threat to the country. “The other thing that I reflect on about 9/11, that was a surprise attack. We didn’t see it coming. We weren’t prepared,” he said. “Some, like Todd, had to go to battle that day. Others had to rush into buildings to try and save people. We weren’t ready for that attack.”
He argued the enemy has simply changed form. “Our enemies haven’t gone away,” Beamer said. “They identify themselves as Democratic socialists. Their platform is one that aims to destroy all the values and the foundations of this country that we’ve enjoyed for hundreds of years.”
He closed by casting early voting, which begins in Michigan in a few weeks, as the next front in that fight. “Well, the good news is, in this upcoming attack, and we know when it starts, early voting starts in a few weeks. That’s when this battle begins. We all have the same weapon. I’ve got a ballot,” Beamer said.
