The FBI is rolling out a national counter-drone training center to help law enforcement detect, identify, and stop unlawful drone activity, backed by a Trump executive order and new agency investments in unmanned aircraft systems. The program at Redstone Arsenal will focus on practical training, legal compliance, and preparing for big events like the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics. Leadership is framing this as a commonsense national security move alongside FCC steps to block risky foreign-made drones. The aim is simple: modernize fast, keep Americans safe, and make sure federal and local teams can work together when the threat appears.

The new National Counter-UAS Training Center is being run by the FBI out of Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, and it reflects a clear shift toward hands-on preparedness. Law enforcement will get practical instruction on how to detect, track, and mitigate unlawful unmanned aircraft systems when they have legal authority to act. That training is meant to turn technology into a working tool for homeland security, not another bureaucracy.

“Unmanned aircrafts are increasingly exploited by criminals, terrorists, and hostile foreign actors — making the counter UAS program a critical area for the FBI to modernize and adapt to stay ahead of the threat,” Patel wrote on X. That straight-up line names the problem and the intent to stay ahead of it, which is exactly what good policy looks like when the risks are real. Turning warning signs into training and tactics is how you deter bad actors before they cause damage.

President Donald Trump’s June executive order set this chain of events in motion and gave the FBI the authority to build a national training hub. The program is designed to comply with the National Defense Authorization Act passed by Congress this year so the legal framework lines up with practical needs. Agencies will be able to operate within clear rules, and that legal clarity speeds effective response when seconds matter.

The training center also has a calendar in mind: major international events bring big security challenges, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics are on that list. Preparing for those crowds means practicing layered defenses and coordination across federal, state, and local teams. The goal is to ensure drones cannot be used to disrupt or endanger attendees or critical infrastructure during those high-profile events.

“This is an investment that will pay huge dividends for America’s national security in the years to come,” he added. That line captures why this matters beyond one incident or headline; investing in preparedness lowers risk overall and gives first responders the tools they need. Smart investment in training and tech is cheaper than cleaning up after an attack or incident.

TRUMP ADMIN CUTS RED TAPE ON COMMERCIAL DRONES TO COMPETE WITH CHINA’S DOMINANCE OF THE MARKET

The FCC recently moved to ban new foreign-made drones deemed a national security risk, adding UAS components made in China and certain other countries to its covered list. That regulatory pressure and the FBI’s operational training form a two-pronged approach: reduce risky supply chains and strengthen on-the-ground defenses. It is practical to cut off high-risk gear at the source while making sure responders know how to counter threats in real time.

Deputy Director Dan Bongino wrote on X that the “drone threat isn’t in the future, it’s in the now,” and the point is blunt and true. This is not an abstract planning exercise; it is a present security environment that demands fast adaptation and decisive action. Local police, federal agents, and private event planners need to be drilled on responses now, so they do not have to improvise under pressure.
