Lawyers for Dr. Anthony Fauci have launched a legal defense fund as federal and state inquiries pile up, Republicans press for accountability over the pandemic response, and states probe possible misconduct and financial ties. The fund’s site lays out a plan to cover legal and administrative costs, and Fauci’s team says any leftover money will go to charity. Meanwhile, subpoenas, a contempt vote, and pleas from state attorneys general have made this a political and legal flashpoint.

The Anthony S. Fauci M.D. Legal Defense Fund was established to help cover the legal representation and associated administrative costs for Dr. Fauci,” the defense fund’s website says. “Your contributions directly support these defense efforts and ensure comprehensive legal support during ongoing inquiries and proceedings. The fund is positioned as the mechanism to meet mounting legal bills as investigations continue.

Republicans have pushed hard on the origins of COVID-19 and Fauci’s public guidance, arguing he misled the country and avoided full transparency. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul led the charge in the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and pressed the U.S. Department of Justice to take action after a contentious hearing. That hearing included repeated invocations of the Fifth Amendment by Fauci and ended with the committee voting to hold him in contempt of Congress.

Fauci’s lawyers are defending their client vigorously and framing the attacks as political. “Fauci is facing an unprecedented legal barrage for a retired civil servant, and he deserves a robust defense against these unfounded and frivolous actions,” David Schertler, a lawyer for Fauci, told Reuters. “Dr. Fauci has not done anything wrong, and we are prepared to fight back against this shameful harassment of an honorable man who dedicated his career to saving lives.”

The legal team has also said any funds left over when the inquiries conclude will be directed to charity, a point they emphasize to counter critics who question the optics of soliciting donations. That explanation hasn’t quelled skeptical lawmakers who say the scale of the investigations calls for full document production and direct answers. A guilty plea by a former adviser for attempting to conceal pandemic-related documents has added fuel to those concerns.

Fauci’s long career draws attention on both factual and political fronts: he led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for nearly 40 years and retired in 2022. He advised seven presidents and served on the White House Coronavirus Task Force during Donald Trump’s first term, making him one of the most visible public health figures in modern memory. His guidance pushed mask use, social distancing, vaccines, and lockdown measures during the pandemic.

Political fallout has followed Fauci beyond Congress. Florida’s attorney general has opened an inquiry into whether Fauci personally profited from pandemic guidance and has issued a subpoena to the 85-year-old, with Louisiana and West Virginia signaling support for the probe. State-led efforts like this reflect a broader Republican view that local and state authorities must scrutinize federal officials when federal oversight appears lacking.

On the legal protection front, former President Joe Biden issued Fauci a preemptive pardon before leaving office, a move that satisfied supporters but worried critics who say pardons do not erase the need for accountability in all forums. Questions remain among Republicans about the scope of such a pardon and whether it shields a public servant from state-level civil or administrative consequences. That uncertainty keeps the legal battle alive across different jurisdictions.

Financial scrutiny is part of the story as well: during his final years in government Fauci was among the highest-paid federal employees, and reports have highlighted a sizable federal pension and a reported household net worth. Those facts have become talking points for lawmakers who argue financial transparency should accompany the legal document requests. Opponents say the public deserves clarity on whether policy advice intersected with personal gain.

The legal fight over Fauci’s legacy and conduct is now both a courtroom and political theater, with defense fundraising, subpoenas, state investigations, and a contempt citation all unfolding at once. For Republicans who have made oversight a priority, the next steps are enforcement of document requests, follow-through on state subpoenas, and a push to make the process transparent to the public. The outcome will shape how future pandemic guidance and federal scientific leadership are held accountable.
