President Donald Trump fired off sharp warnings after a trio of far-left candidates won primaries in deep blue New York districts, arguing their victories show an alarming shift in parts of the Democratic coalition. The contests handed easy paths to Congress for Darializa Avila Chevalier, Claire Valdez and Brad Lander, and Trump used his platform to call out the movement driving these wins. The result has Republican voters and observers sounding alarms about radical ideas moving from the fringe into mainstream Democratic picks.
“Many Communists running in badly failing Blue States. The votes seem to have them doing quite well against each other. The bad news is that history has conclusively shown that the downtrodden States that they will soon be running will ONLY GET WORSE. MAGA!”
The three victors all carried endorsements from radical New York figures and will face almost no serious opposition in districts built to return Democrats. Darializa Avila Chevalier won in the 13th, Claire Valdez in the 7th and Brad Lander in the 10th, each emerging from crowded primaries where the progressive wing had momentum. Those wins show how local power brokers can reshape Congressional delegations when the establishment flounders.
Avila Chevalier and Valdez are tied to the Democratic Socialists of America, once dismissed as a fringe faction but now a growing force within parts of the party. The DSA’s rise has been steady, moving from campus activism into neighborhood politics and primary challenges that unseat longer-serving incumbents. Republicans say the shift underlines a broader problem: policy ideas that appeal to a vocal base in primaries often falter in general elections and can push the party further from center voters.
Lander, long labeled a progressive and formerly affiliated with the DSA, left the group after its response to the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack. DSA insists that Israel’s response to that attack constitutes a “genocide,” and has made support for Gaza against Israel a central tenet of its platform. Lander’s split highlights divisions even inside the left about how to handle foreign policy flashpoints and how far candidates will go to appease activist factions.
Avila Chevalier’s upset of five-term incumbent Adriano Espaillat marked a raw turn toward a more hard-left agenda and raised eyebrows about the candidates being elevated. Her platform pushed for abolishing ICE, eliminating all deportations and a move to socialized healthcare, signaling clear policy differences from the old guard. She defeated Espaillat by a narrow margin, showing how energized progressive voters can alter long-standing power dynamics in urban districts.
Her campaign was shadowed by old social media posts that became a test of how the new left handles controversy on the stump. She had called President Joe Biden a “rapist,” denounced Vice President Kamala Harris in harsh terms and demanded the abolishment of police in certain posts critics flagged as extreme. She also called America a “f—–g disgrace,” and bragged about using the American flag as a napkin to wipe her hands, comments that opponents seized on as proof of unseriousness about governing.
Valdez cruised to victory in her race and is poised to take over the seat being vacated by a retiring representative, cementing another win for the progressive insurgency in the city. Her emphatic margin made clear this wing has strong organizational strength inside parts of the city’s political machinery. For Republicans, these pick-ups represent both an opportunity and a warning: spotlight the excesses, but also prepare for energized local machines.
“America the Beautiful will NEVER be a Communist Country!!!”
“Weak and pathetic Congressman Dan Goldman just lost, BIG! I guess people didn’t like him illegally targeting President TRUMP. In any event, this jerk is finally GONE! President DJT”
“Mayor Mamdani pulled through 3 solid Communists, and has received loud and universal applause from the Fake News Media. Congratulations Mr. Mayor!” “I went 16-0 last night, helping to elect wonderful American Patriots, and the Media doesn’t say a word.”
“Over the last two years, my endorsement has netted 259 Primary WINS, and almost no losses, with Zero media attention!!! FAKE NEWS.”
