A seasoned survivalist has sounded an alarm for hikers and adventurers venturing into the Ozarks of Arkansas, urging them to avoid the area. The warning comes as authorities continue their hunt for Grant Hardin, a former police chief who escaped from a medium-security prison in Calico Rock. Known as the “Devil in the Ozarks,” Hardin was imprisoned for heinous crimes, including murder and rape.

Shawn Hendrix, the survivalist, shared his thoughts with Fox News Digital, expressing that Hardin’s downfall might come from an unexpected quarter. “I think that the big thing that gets him caught or dead in the field is getting injured … or a foodborne illness — he drinks some bad water,” Hendrix noted. His hope is that Hardin encounters misfortune through illness, thus preventing any potential threats to innocent hikers or campers.

Authorities have released a recent photograph of Hardin, who now sports facial hair, as he remains elusive over a week after his escape. Hendrix pointed out that Hardin’s past actions show a blatant disregard for human life. Arkansas officials have cautioned the public that Hardin may be armed and dangerous, making avoidance of the area crucial.

The escape itself was audacious. Hardin managed to flee through a sally port, garbed in a makeshift uniform resembling that of the Arkansas Department of Corrections (ADC). Rand Champion, ADC’s communications director, clarified that the uniform Hardin wore was not official, highlighting the calculated nature of the escape.

Hardin’s criminal history is chilling. He confessed to shooting a man in 2017, a crime that later linked him via DNA to a 1997 cold-case rape. His guilty plea in both cases underscores a pattern of violent, remorseless behavior, painting a picture of a deeply troubled individual.

“This guy is just so evil. I mean, this guy is a sociopath,” Hendrix remarked, emphasizing Hardin’s lack of empathy and his law enforcement background. The former chief’s long tenure in the police force raises questions about how he managed to remain in service for so many years.

Physically, Hardin is described as a 6-foot tall, 259-pound white male. His familiarity with the Ozark Mountain region gives him a significant advantage in evading capture. The dense woods, with their numerous caves and natural resources, provide ample hiding spots and sustenance.

Hendrix speculated that Hardin’s physical size might aid his survival, allowing him to sustain himself for weeks in the wilderness. The Ozarks are rich with resources like berries, fish, and native fruits, which could support someone with knowledge of the land. However, the noise from using a gun could compromise his secrecy.

Law enforcement teams are on the lookout for subtle signs of human presence in the woods, such as concealed fires or covered materials. The Arkansas Department of Corrections is actively involved in the search, working alongside other agencies to apprehend the fugitive.

The FBI and U.S. Marshals have put forth a $25,000 reward for information leading to Hardin’s capture. Citizens with any knowledge of his whereabouts are encouraged to reach out via the provided contact channels, increasing the chances of his apprehension.

In a recent press briefing, Champion mentioned that authorities have a rough idea of Hardin’s escape route. However, a federal complaint filed suggests he might have crossed state lines, with potential sightings reported outside Arkansas.

These unconfirmed sightings include one in Missouri, just a day after Hardin managed to slip away. This information, initially shared by The Arkansas Democrat Gazette, adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing search efforts.

“He’s familiar with the Ozark Mountain region, possibly hiding in caves or rugged terrain he knows well,” wrote Deputy U.S. Marshal Robert J. Hammons. This knowledge of the area poses a significant challenge to those trying to locate him.

The situation remains tense, as law enforcement continues to pursue every lead. The combined efforts of local and federal authorities demonstrate a committed push to ensure public safety and bring Hardin to justice.
