President-elect Donald Trump has unveiled a bold initiative to streamline the federal government by creating a new agency: the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Trump announced that tech billionaire Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy will co-lead this department, tasked with slashing waste, reducing bureaucracy, and improving overall government operations.
According to Trump, the goal of DOGE is to modernize the government by eliminating inefficiencies and unnecessary spending. “It will become, potentially, ‘The Manhattan Project’ of our time,” he said during Tuesday’s announcement. Trump emphasized that DOGE’s mission aligns with long-standing Republican priorities of reducing the size and scope of government.
Musk and Ramaswamy will work directly with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to execute these reforms. Both leaders are expected to bring their entrepreneurial expertise to Washington, offering “advice and guidance from outside of government,” Trump said.
Trump has set an ambitious deadline for DOGE’s work to be completed by July 4, 2026, coinciding with the United States’ 250th anniversary. “A smaller government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy, will be the perfect gift to America on the 250th Anniversary of The Declaration of Independence,” Trump declared.

Elon Musk also took to X, addressing criticisms head-on: “Threat to democracy? Nope, threat to BUREAUCRACY!!!” Musk’s endorsement of Trump earlier this year marked a significant shift in his political stance, following an assassination attempt on Trump in July.

DOGE’s formation is part of a broader effort by Trump to assemble a high-powered team for his administration. Alongside Musk and Ramaswamy, Trump has announced several key cabinet appointments:
- Marco Rubio as Secretary of State
- Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security
- Elise Stefanik as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations
- Mike Huckabee as Ambassador to Israel
These appointments reflect Trump’s commitment to advancing his “America First” agenda with a strong conservative leadership team.
