Elon Musk blasted Rep. Ilhan Omar after a resurfaced speech clip showed her promising to protect Somali interests in the United States, sparking fresh debate about loyalty and representation. The exchange pulled in President Trump, drew attention to fraud cases tied to Minnesota’s Somali community, and pushed political passions higher around identity, immigration, and accountability.

Elon Musk reposted a clip of Rep. Ilhan Omar speaking to Somali constituents in Minnesota and wrote, “This sounds like treason.” The short video, originally recorded in January 2024, circulated widely after the Tesla and SpaceX CEO amplified it, turning a local stump speech into a national controversy overnight.

In that January address, Omar told supporters she would push back against moves she described as threats to Somali interests, arguing she would oppose any naval buildup on Somaliland’s coast. The translation of her remarks includes the line, “The U.S. government will do what we ask it to do,” and continues with a longer passage: “We should have this kind of confidence in ourselves as Somalis. We live in this country. We are taxpayers in this country. This country is one where one of your daughters sits in Congress. While I am in Congress, no one will take Somalia’s sea, and the U.S. government won’t support others to rob us. Don’t stress over it, Minnesotans.”

Minnesota hosts the largest Somali refugee community in the country, with many living inside Omar’s district, and the clip landed amid heightened scrutiny of that population. The video surged again right after President Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania where he attacked Omar personally, saying, “I love this Ilhan Omar, whatever the hell her name is, with the little turban,” and adding, “She comes in, does nothing but b—h… She comes from her country, where I mean, it’s considered about the worst country in the world, right?” He urged the crowd, “We ought to get her the hell out,” while attendees chanted, “Send her back!”

The president also tied the resurfaced remarks to a string of fraud cases that have targeted members of Minnesota’s Somali community, pointing to dozens of arrests and charges linked to schemes he says cost the state roughly $1 billion. That line of attack broadened the debate from a single speech to questions about enforcement, oversight, and the responsibilities of local leaders when federal and state programs are exploited.

Omar fired back on X, writing, “Trump’s obsession with me is beyond weird. He needs serious help… He continues to be a national embarrassment.” Her response framed the criticism as personal and political theater, and it reinforced the rift between her supporters, who view her as an advocate for refugees and diaspora interests, and opponents, who see the remarks as evidence of misplaced priorities.

From a Republican perspective, the clip reinforced long-standing concerns about whether some lawmakers place foreign or tribal loyalties ahead of U.S. national interest. Opponents argue that saying “The U.S. government will do what we ask it to do” goes beyond vigorous advocacy and crosses into an alarming claim about using American power to serve another polity’s aims.

Supporters of Omar counter that she was reassuring a worried community and asserting their place in American life, pointing to language in the clip about being taxpayers and having representation in Congress. That defense meets an uneasy reaction from critics who say public officials must be crystal clear that their first duty is to the United States and its laws, especially on matters involving foreign bases or military posture.

The resurfaced footage has become a political flashpoint that both sides are using to mobilize voters and shape narratives ahead of coming election fights. Expect the clip to be replayed, dissected, and deployed by campaigns as they press their case about who represents whom and what loyalty to the country actually looks like.
