There is no new episode of “Dutton Ranch” this week, and fans will have to wait well into next year for Season 2. Paramount+ renewed the Taylor Sheridan spin-off on June 24, ahead of the Season 1 finale, but production is not expected to begin until early 2027.
Star Kelly Reilly told The Hollywood Reporter in July that the writers’ room will get moving soon even though filming is months away. “We’re slated to start early 2027 to film,” Reilly said. “But the room starts up pretty quick. I think we’re going to be very much involved in the room, so the next sort of six months is all about writing it.”
Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger in July with Episode 9, “El Padrino.” Beth (Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) are left worried about Carter (Finn Little), kidnapped by cartel men working for Mariano (Raoul Max Trujillo). Beulah (Annette Bening) and Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind) are grieving Rob-Will (Jai Courtney), apparently killed by his own brother, Joaquin (Juan Pablo Raba).
The series has been a ratings success for Paramount+. According to a company press release, “Dutton Ranch” pulled in 12.9 million viewers globally in its first seven days, the biggest original series launch in the streamer’s history. Its two-episode debut on Paramount Network on May 15 drew 2.9 million total viewers, the biggest cable series premiere since 2023, with the premiere telecast alone ranking as the No. 1 cable entertainment show among adults 18-49 and total viewers.
Matt Thunell, president of Paramount Television Studios, credited the writing and cast for the show’s early success. “Dutton Ranch has resonated with audiences in a powerful way, building on the legacy of beloved characters, while establishing its own identity,” Thunell said. “Thank you to our partners at Paramount+ and 101 Studios for a phenomenal first season. We look forward to bringing fans more stories from these unforgettable characters in Season 2.”
Rumors of a rift between Hauser and Sheridan had some fans speculating Hauser might not return. There is no indication that is the case. Hauser serves as an executive producer on the series, and the show was built around Beth, Rip and Carter’s story. Season 2 will bring a new showrunner, Benjamin Cavell, after Season 1 showrunner Chad Feehan left the production just three weeks before it premiered.
While “Dutton Ranch” fans wait, Sheridan’s other spin-off, “Marshals,” is already back for Season 2, which premiered October 4 on CBS with new episodes airing Sundays and streaming the next day on Paramount+.
Luke Grimes has confirmed Beth and Rip will not appear on “Marshals” this season, but he did not rule out a future crossover. “It’s not out of the question that we might have some sort of crossover at some point. Beth’s basically Kayce’s only living family member other than Tate. It would make sense that down the line we’d at least talk,” Grimes told TV Insider. “[Kelly and I have] texted about it back and forth a lot, talked about how it’d be fun and necessary for our story arcs, however they’re going to end.”
Season 1 of “Dutton Ranch” is streaming now on Paramount+.
