The Department of Justice has opened an investigation into multiple sexual assault allegations against former California Representative Eric Swalwell, while local prosecutors in Los Angeles and New York pursue their own inquiries. Five women have come forward with accusations spanning several years, and those claims include extremely serious allegations that have prompted criminal reviews, a suspension of Swalwell’s gubernatorial campaign, and his resignation from Congress. Swalwell has denied the allegations, offered apologies for past judgment, and insisted he will fight the claims while stepping down to avoid distracting his constituents. The unfolding matter has political consequences and raises sharp questions about accountability and how scandals are handled in Washington.

The list of accusations is heavy and specific, with at least two claims described as criminal in nature and now under local scrutiny. Those allegations include that he allegedly drugged and raped one woman and sexually assaulted a staffer, which is why both local district attorneys have opened probes. The DOJ’s involvement signals federal interest and escalates the seriousness beyond routine political mudslinging.

Republicans watching this see a pattern that demands both a full accounting and a measure of accountability, not only to voters but to the victims named. Political leaders ought to let investigators do their jobs while recognizing that the optics here are disastrous for a sitting lawmaker turned candidate. When serious allegations stack up, the right response is to support impartial inquiry and to respect the legal process.

Swalwell moved quickly to suspend his run for governor and resigned his House seat amid the growing pressure and attention. That resignation came with a public statement that mixed apology and denial, a combination that leaves many unsatisfied. “I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past,” Swalwell said in a statement announcing his resignation. “I will fight the serious, false allegations made against me. However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make.”

He also addressed the rush to punishment in Congress while insisting his removal without process would be wrong, even as he acknowledged the distraction. “I am aware of efforts to bring an immediate expulsion vote against me and other members. Expelling anyone in Congress without due process, within days of an allegation being made, is wrong,” he continued. “But it’s also wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties. Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress.”

Supporters pushed back with a familiar mix of political defense and accusations about timing and motive, arguing the story surfaced at a crucial moment in a campaign. “This false, outrageous rumor is being spread 27 days before an election begins by flailing opponents who have sadly teamed up with MAGA conspiracy theorists because they know Eric Swalwell is the frontrunner in this race,” Micah Beasley, a spokesperson for Swalwell, said at the time. That framing aims to shift focus to partisan attacks, but it does not resolve the substance of the allegations.

Swalwell’s career in public service stretched from a local prosecutor’s office to the Dublin city council and then to Congress, where he served starting in 2013. That background is now overshadowed by multiple accusations and investigations, and many rightfully ask whether his past conduct matches the responsibilities he was entrusted with. Lawmakers are not above scrutiny simply because they occupy public office, and the facts must come out.

The political fallout will play out in several arenas: federal investigators, state prosecutors, and the court of public opinion. Republicans will press for thorough, transparent probes that protect victims while preserving basic legal rights for the accused. This moment is a reminder that standards for elected officials matter, and that voters expect decisive, clear action when allegations of this magnitude surface.
