Rep. Eric Swalwell’s surprise 2026 California governor bid landed on late-night television and social media, where he leaned into his opposition to Donald Trump and touted public safety credentials while promising a fresh economic story for the state; his entry heats up a field that already includes well-known Democrats and a couple of Republicans eyeing the contest.

Eric Swalwell announced he is running for governor of California, making his intentions public during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The choice to unveil a major campaign on late-night TV speaks to a media-first approach that will play well with national audiences but raises questions about substance for state voters.

Swalwell has positioned himself as a clear antagonist to President Donald Trump, and he even engaged directly with the president on social media. “He’s going to hate tonight’s episode,” Swalwell wrote on X in response to a post by the president criticizing Jimmy Kimmel, a move that underlines how his messaging is tied to national partisan battles more than typical gubernatorial retail politics.

TRUMP DOJ OPENS MORTGAGE FRAUD PROBE INTO ERIC SWALWELL AS CONGRESSMAN VOWS TO KEEP FIGHTING BACK

The congressman frames his campaign in combative terms, promising to serve as a “protector and fighter” if elected governor, language aimed at reassuring voters who worry about crime and safety. He stresses his law enforcement roots as part of that pitch, noting family and professional ties to policing and prosecution to bolster his credibility on public safety matters.

Swalwell laid out two priorities he believes the next governor should have, focusing first on keeping Trump “out of our homes, streets and lives” and second on rebuilding the state’s economy. “One, keep Trump out of our homes, streets and lives,” he said, making clear that his campaign will keep national culture war themes front and center alongside local policy promises.

On the economy and state renewal, Swalwell says he wants to “write the story of a new California on lower prices, on business growth and modernizing the state,” a brief phrase that signals an awareness of voters’ concerns about costs and the business climate. That line attempts to broaden his message beyond confrontation and into tangible goals, though specifics will matter when voters start asking how those goals will be achieved.

“I’m running to be a governor for all Californians,” he later told MediasTouch. “I’m the son of two Republicans, the son of a cop, and I grew up in a law-enforcement family. I worked as a prosecutor myself. I know that whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat in this state, public safety for yourself, your kids, and your community is a top priority.” These lines lean into a personal story designed to reach across partisan lines while still keeping his national profile intact.

SWALWELL MOCKED FOR DEMANDING 2028 DEMOCRATS PLEDGE TO DEMOLISH TRUMP’S BALLROOM

Swalwell will be competing for the Democratic nomination against figures like Xavier Becerra, Katie Porter and Tom Steyer, each bringing different strengths and bases of support across California. On the Republican side, the field so far has included Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, setting up a general election where contrast on issues like public safety and the economy will be front and center.

Governor Gavin Newsom, also a Democrat, will be term-limited and thus not on the 2026 ballot, though he is being discussed as a potential national candidate down the road. With Newsom out of the running, the 2026 race becomes an open-door contest for leadership in California, and Swalwell’s celebrity-infused entry ensures the conversation will be loud and chaotic from the start.
