The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently hired the New York-based Debevoise & Plimpton law firm to potentially help Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in any impeachment proceedings. But the firm’s employees have overwhelmingly donated to Democratic causes, including President Joe Biden’s past candidacy.
According to government records, DHS entered into a potential $1.5 million contract with Debevoise & Plimpton – a figure that could reach up to $3 million – until early January 2025. All this money could be used to defend Mayorkas if Republicans manage to impeach him.
David O’Neil, a Debevoise & Plimpton partner, will lead Mayorkas’ defense team. He’s no stranger to impeachment, as he aided House Democrats in their impeachment efforts against then-President Donald Trump.
Besides O’Neil, Anna Moody and Carter Burwell, former counsel to Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn, will join Mayorkas’ defense team.
It’s clear that DHS’ decision to hire Debevoise & Plimpton was politically motivated. During the 2022 election cycle, individuals at the firm donated $289,000 of their nearly $310,000 in political contributions – or 95 percent – to liberal campaigns and committees. And during the 2020 election cycle, the firm’s individuals donated 97 percent of their contributions to Democrat committees. The largest recipient was Biden, who received nearly $245,000 from the firm’s employees.
Not surprisingly, the firm has also worked on several issues alongside left-wing groups, including immigration matters. It even provided pro bono work with LGBTQ+ immigrants.
Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., is introducing a new impeachment article against Mayorkas, accusing him of violating his oath of office and failing to enforce U.S. immigration law. Biggs has repeatedly called for Mayorkas’ removal.
It’s sickening to see how the federal government is squandering taxpayer money in order to protect a man who has failed to enforce U.S. immigration laws. Not only is the DHS protecting a man who has openly ignored his duty, but it’s also using a law firm whose employees are heavily biased towards the Democratic Party.
It’s time for Mayorkas to be held accountable for his actions. The federal government should stop wasting taxpayers’ money and get rid of Mayorkas once and for all.
