Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant has hired a high-powered law firm after being cited for a misdemeanor stemming from an October altercation in a Southlake, Texas parking lot.

Bryant was issued a citation for assault by contact, a Class C misdemeanor under Texas law. A Southlake Municipal Court official told the California Post that Bryant has retained attorney Levi McCathern’s firm for the matter. McCathern is also currently representing Los Angeles Rams receiver Puka Nacua in a separate civil case involving a biting allegation.

According to the Southlake Police Department, officers responded to a reported fight in progress at approximately 12:59 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, in a retail parking lot in the 2200 block of FM 1709. Multiple callers reported several people involved in the altercation and the possible presence of a weapon, prompting officers to draw their firearms upon arrival as a precaution.

“On Sunday, October 25, at approximately 12:59 p.m., Southlake officers responded to a reported fight in progress in a retail parking lot in the 2200 block of FM 1709. Several callers reported that multiple individuals were involved in the altercation as well as a possible weapon. Based on that information, officers drew their firearms upon arrival as a precaution to address any potential threats and ensure the safety of everyone at the scene. Several individuals were temporarily detained as part of the investigation. No firearms were recovered at the scene,” police said in a statement.

Police said the confrontation began as a traffic dispute near Kimball Avenue, where 37-year-old Desmond Bryant reported he had been cut off by another motorist. Both parties then drove into the parking lot, where the argument escalated and the alleged assault took place. Bryant was cited at the scene and released.

Bryant has acknowledged knocking a phone out of a man’s hand during the confrontation, which he said grew out of an encounter with two men he accused of driving recklessly. He claimed one of the men threatened to shoot him.

“He go to threatening me and basically saying, um, he’ll insinuate that he’ll, you know, he’ll shoot me or whatever,” Bryant told OutKick.

Bryant said the man did not actually have a weapon, but instead pulled out his phone and began recording him.

“I told him, you know, get the phone off me,” Bryant said. “So, what I ended up doing is I knocked the phone out of his hand.”

McCathern did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the citation.
