A House Democrat under an ethics probe now faces fresh accusations that go beyond an affair; a woman interviewed by investigators says the contact was not voluntary and her lawyers are calling it an assault. The law firm representing the woman has made blunt statements to the committee and the congressman has acknowledged private mistakes, but insists they were consensual. The case is unfolding amid growing pressure for congressional accountability and broader questions about staff safety on Capitol Hill.

“We represent one of the women who was interviewed by the House Committee on Ethics about her experience of sexual harassment and assault by Representative Jimmy Gomez. Contrary to Representative Gomez’s assertion in his statement, his actions were not ‘consensual in nature’ with respect to our client,” the woman’s lawyers said. The legal team delivered that line to make clear their client disputes the congressman’s framing of events and expects investigators to agree.

“We fully expect that the House Committee on Ethics will come to the same conclusion in its investigation.” That confidence signals the lawyers believe the evidence favors their client, and they are pressing the committee to move beyond polite inquiries and toward real accountability. The tone here is not neutral: it’s a demand for action from a branch of government that often protects insiders.

Representative Gomez issued a public acknowledgment that he had “made mistakes outside [his] marriage,” and defended himself by saying, “Although my actions were consensual in nature and haven’t violated the law or House Ethics rules, that doesn’t diminish the impact that these mistakes have made on those I care about the most.” His concession accepts personal fault but stops short of admitting any wrongdoing under the rules or law, which leaves investigators to square conflicting accounts.

The woman’s lawyers called the behavior “just the latest example of brazen sexual misconduct by a member of Congress.” That phrase captures a broader pattern that critics say goes beyond isolated incidents, pointing to an institutional problem where powerful lawmakers exploit young staffers. For Republicans and many independents, the argument is simple: Congress must clean house when members abuse their authority, or trust in the institution will keep eroding.

“Congress must act to rein in its members who seem to believe that preying on young women working on Capitol Hill is one of the perks of their job. We will continue to work with our client and with the House Committee on Ethics to ensure there is accountability for Representative Gomez and a safe path for any other survivors to come forward and share their experiences,” the lawyers added. That plea ties the immediate allegation to a push for safer workplaces and clearer consequences for misconduct.

Gomez’s office was contacted for comment, and the investigation by House oversight officials will determine whether the matter breaks rules or laws. This episode follows a stream of recent scandals involving lawmakers from both parties, though the political fallout often lands harder on those accused of exploiting staff. Voters are watching whether Congress will treat staff protection as a priority or keep shielding its own.

He is the latest House lawmaker to face accusations about improper relations with a staffer. His former ally, ex-Rep. Eric Swalwell, saw his gubernatorial campaign face serious trouble earlier this year amid unrelated allegations, and other members have left races under pressure. Reps. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, and Chuck Edwards, R-N.C., both dropped their re-election bids amid backlash over sexual harassment accusations, showing that political careers can be abruptly derailed when scandal hits.
