On Thursday, the Democrat-controlled House passed a bill called the Equality Act, extensive legislation that would add sexual orientation and transgender rights to be protected classes under the 1964 Civil Rights Act. It’s also not Constitutional, because Congress doesn’t have the authority under the Constitution to create such a bill, but since when has that stopped members from either party from doing whatever they want? By the way, Congress did not have the authority to pass the 1964 Civil Rights Act either, but if you point that out the leftists immediately accuse you of being a racist, because identity politics is more important than Constitutional law.
We have to divorce ourselves from whatever bill is in contention and look at the Constitutional process. Each time we ignore the Constitution we weaken it and this is how we have arrived at the point where most things passed by Congress and signed into law are not Constitutional.
The legislation, passed in a vote of 224-206, would amend federal civil rights laws to add protections for LGBTQ Americans in employment, education, housing, credit, jury service, etc. President Biden has called the bill “a critical step toward ensuring that America lives up to our foundational values of equality and freedom for all.” I don’t see why any of this was necessary. We already have laws for all of these things as protections for all Americans. LGBTQ people already have the right to sue if they are discriminated against. This isn’t civil rights, because they already have them as codified in law. These are “special rights” so that the Woke Supremacy feels good about themselves.
GOP members of Congress, being the only sane ones left, have fought against the bill on the grounds that it endangers biological women’s safety in that it states in the bill that “an individual shall not be denied access to a shared facility, including a restroom, a locker room, and a dressing room, that is in accordance with the individual’s gender identity.”
This bill also harms religious freedom, because it regulates religious nonprofits and it stipulates that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act doesn’t apply to claims under the Equality Act, even though it does. In fact, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act was created precisely because of tyrannical attacks like this against religious freedoms.
“We have passed it in the House before — the Equality Act, H.R. 5, to end discrimination against the LGBTQ community,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Thursday morning before the bill’s passing. “This time, it will be not only passed in the House but on a path to a signing at the White House. We’re very excited about that.”
Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) was the only Republican senator who co-sponsored the Equality Act back in 2019 and has said she will not co-sponsor the legislation this time around because of problems she has found in the bill.
On Thursday, Collins said to the Washington Blade, “There were certain provisions of the Equality Act which needed revision,” She added, “Unfortunately the commitments that were made to me were not [given] last year.” Of course not, because Democrats always lie about things they say they will do in the future for your considerations now.
Other Republicans have issues with the bill. For example, Representative Andrew Glyde (R-GA) has argued that the legislation would violate women’s right to privacy and safety in locker rooms and showers. What Glyde isn’t understanding is that these nutjobs in the Democratic Party, the so-called party of science, actually believe that men who put on dresses and identify as women are in reality real women. Therefore, they do not see a problem with men who still have penises wearing a dress being inside areas of privacy for women. It’s totally ridiculous, but here we are.
Glyde also said he has problems with provisions in the bill on things like cross-sex hormone medical treatments and surgeries for minors because he considers that child abuse. Any sane person would.
