Conservatives are calling out media hypocrisy after newly sworn-in New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani made a hand gesture during his inauguration that critics say mirrors a motion Elon Musk made last year, a move that once triggered headlines accusing Musk of a “Nazi salute.” The reaction from the right points to selective outrage and inconsistent standards when the same gesture is judged depending on the politician or ideology involved.

Republican voices say the contrast is stark and politically charged, not accidental. They note that when Elon Musk made the same motion at a public event, the mainstream press blasted it as a fascist sign, yet coverage of Mamdani’s identical movement has been muted. That silence, conservatives argue, exposes a media eager to weaponize symbolism against their opponents while giving allies a pass.

“Not a single one of these legacy media outlets reported on Mamdani’s identical hand gesture which they called @elonmusk a nazi for Do you see what’s happening?” one popular conservative account posted, pointing to a stack of headlines. That post set off a chain of reactions from commentators and conservative organizations demanding equal treatment from reporters. The contrast has been used to highlight broader concerns about selective outrage across newsrooms.

“They lie,” Musk posted to X Friday in response to that collection of headlines, a blunt summation of the conservative narrative. Outrage intensified when commentators compared the two incidents and asked why one received endless condemnation while the other barely registered. For many on the right, this feels like another example of double standards in modern media coverage.

“HOLY CRAP! Zohran Mamdani just did the EXACT SAME gesture as Elon Musk When Elon does it, it’s a ‘Nazi salute.’ When communist Zohran does it, the media is silent. The media is the enemy of the people,” one conservative commentator said, underscoring the anger. That quote circulated alongside screenshots and clips that conservatives say prove their point. The intensity of the response shows how symbolic actions can become political ammunition overnight.

“Did Mamdani do a nazi salute?!?! Literally shaking rn I’m sure CNN and MSNBC will be all over this,” another post mocked, reflecting how quickly partisan reactions amplify on social platforms. Conservatives framed the discrepancy as more than nitpicking; they see it as evidence of media bias that favors left-leaning figures. That perception fuels distrust in institutions that claim neutral reporting.

“When Elon signals his heart goes out to the crowd he’s a ‘NAZI’. When Mamdani does it, its perfectly fine… The left tried to use that signal from Elon to gaslight people into people into thinking he is a Nazi because they saw it as politically useful.. They are not ideologically consistent and their hypocrisy knows no bounds. They do NOT care about any of that. They just care about political power and feeling virtuous,” another critic wrote, calling out what he described as calculated media framing.

“Zohran Mamdani can make this gesture and everyone loves him for it, but when Elon Musk does it? The leftist media wasted no time calling him a Nazi,” the Media Research Center added, reinforcing the theme of inconsistent coverage. These reactions are part of a larger conservative pushback against what they view as media narratives that target conservatives while excusing progressives. The story is now being used to rally voters who distrust mainstream outlets.

Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, took office with public and private swearing-in ceremonies and was seen lifting his hand from his heart to the crowd at the end of his speech. “I was elected as a Democratic socialist, and I will govern as a Democratic socialist,” he said, laying out his ideological stance without hesitation. He promised bold, expansive governance and said City Hall would not hesitate to use its power to improve New Yorkers’ lives.

“Beginning today, we will govern expansively and audaciously,” Mamdani said, acknowledging bold goals and the likelihood of pushback. “To those who insist that the era of big government is over, hear me when I say this: No longer will City Hall hesitate to use its power to improve New Yorkers’ lives.” Those remarks have sharpened conservative concerns about the direction of the city under his leadership.

Media critics and conservatives asked Mamdani’s team about the uproar and the apparent discrepancy in how gestures are covered, but at the time of reporting they had not received a comment. The debate ties into larger conversations about trust, fairness, and how symbols are interpreted through partisan lenses. For many on the right, the episode confirms a narrative that media criticism is too often selective and politicized.

Musk, who served in a public role during the previous administration, has repeatedly pushed back against comparisons to extremists and called the charges outrageous. “Well, I mean, look, it’s a relentless propaganda campaign… And politics is a blood sport, so they’re going to come up with whatever attacks they can to destroy the public perception of someone,” he said in response to earlier claims. “Now, obviously, I’ve not harmed anyone in my life, so it’s an outrageous thing to claim that I’m a Nazi,” he added, a defense conservatives often cite.
