Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Julian Lewis is recovering in a hospital after suffering a medical emergency Wednesday at the team’s facility in Boulder, his father announced.

Lewis, 19, was quickly transported to a hospital after the emergency. His father, T. Carlton Lewis, posted a statement on X but did not disclose what medical issue his son experienced.

“He is recovering and thankful to his medical team, teammates, and Colorado fans for their prayers and support. Please respect Julian and the Lewis family’s privacy. We will have no further comment at this time.”

Colorado Athletics issued its own statement after Fox News Outkick requested comment:

“Colorado Athletics extends our full support to JuJu and his family through this medical emergency. He remains in the thoughts of every CU player, coach, and staff member and we will continue to assist in any way we can in his full recovery. His health and well-being remain our top priority during this time.”

Lewis opened the season as Colorado’s starting quarterback but was benched by head coach Deion Sanders after four games. His final start came Sept. 26 in a loss to Baylor, after which junior Isaac Wilson took over at the position. This season, Lewis threw for 733 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions across those four starts.

The move hasn’t fixed Colorado’s problems. The Buffaloes are 0-3 since Wilson became the starter and now sit at 2-5 overall, 0-4 in the Big 12 — last in the conference.

One day before Lewis’s medical emergency, reporters asked Sanders whether the team’s losing streak might prompt him to reinsert Lewis at quarterback.

“That’s on him. I don’t think you could find a player in this program — or you may could find some bitter players that have left and didn’t want to leave, but life is what it is — but I don’t treat people unfairly. I don’t play games with young men and their careers and hate on folks. If I’m anything, I’m too forgiving and very, very kind. …You’ve got to always understand that we may know a little more than you do, because we’re inside the locker room. We’re there. We understand what happens.”
