The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a medical transport plane carrying six people that lost contact with air traffic control early Saturday morning off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts.
The Federal Aviation Administration alerted the Coast Guard that it had lost contact with a Gulfstream G100, tail number CGRJP, early Saturday. The Coast Guard confirmed at 3:15 a.m. Saturday that six people were aboard.
The aircraft was flying from Bermuda to Boston when contact was lost. The search is centered off Nantucket, an island roughly 30 miles south of Cape Cod.
The plane was operated by Latitude Air Ambulance, an Ontario-based medical evacuation company, according to company spokesman Clarence Togeretz. Latitude Air Ambulance, based in Hamilton, Ontario, transports patients to hospitals and provides repatriation services.
Flight-tracking data from FlightAware shows the aircraft’s last flight began Friday night, when it departed John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport in Hamilton, Ontario, bound for Bermuda. FlightAware lists Latitude Air Ambulance as the operator, with the plane’s owner listed as unknown.
The Coast Guard said the search was still underway as of 11:45 a.m. Saturday. Crews have deployed planes, a helicopter and two boats, including assets launched from Cape Cod.
The Coast Guard’s Northeast District identified the responding units as:
- An HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew from Air Station Cape Cod
- An HC-130 Hercules crew from Air Station Elizabeth City
- An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod
- A 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station Brant Point
- The Fast Response Cutter William Sparling (WPC-1154)
