Stephanie Vaquer, a native of Chile, won the WWE Women’s World Championship in front of her home crowd in Santiago on Saturday night, defeating champion Liv Morgan in a match that was not supposed to carry major storyline weight.
The bout took place at a WWE house show, an untelevised event held outside the company’s regular weekly broadcasts. Title matches at these shows typically have little bearing on the ongoing storylines fans see on “Monday Night Raw” and other televised programs. Saturday’s result broke from that pattern.
Becky Lynch served as special guest referee for the match. Morgan grew frustrated with Lynch’s officiating during the bout and shoved her, then slapped her across the face. Morgan turned back to Vaquer and was met with a thrust kick. Vaquer attempted to finish the match, but Morgan countered and hit her with an Oblivion.
Lynch began a pin count but stopped at two, giving Morgan an obscene gesture with both hands instead of completing the count. Vaquer capitalized on the distraction, went on the offensive, and finished Morgan with the Vaquer Inferno delivered from the top rope. She pinned Morgan for the win as the crowd in Santiago erupted.
This marks Vaquer’s second reign as champion. She first won the title, which had been vacated, at Wrestlepalooza against Iyo Sky last September, holding it for 210 days before Morgan took it from her at WrestleMania 42. Morgan’s reign ends at 147 days.
Vaquer celebrated in the ring with other women from the Raw roster following the match. Lynch is expected to be among the wrestlers pursuing a title shot next. The win came as WWE’s touring roster prepares for an upcoming “Monday Night Raw” broadcast in Mexico City at Arena CDMX.
