The Los Angeles Chargers dropped to 0-3 on the season after a 24-16 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, but All-Pro safety Derwin James says the team isn’t giving up on a Super Bowl run.
Asked after the game whether the Chargers can still make it to the Super Bowl, James didn’t hesitate.
“Hell yeah! I mean, 14-3 man. I feel like we can go still man and we’re getting better every game,” James said. “… we gotta keep attacking. That’s all we can do.”
The defense backed up part of that claim Sunday, turning in its best performance of the season by forcing five turnovers, including two interceptions of Bills quarterback Josh Allen. Even so, James said the unit left plays on the field.
“We should have had six today. That’s how we look at it as,” James said. “We don’t look at it as finger-pointing.”
The Chargers’ bigger problem was on offense, where a second-half collapse and repeated red-zone failures undercut the defense’s work. In the third quarter, Los Angeles was one yard from the end zone but got hit with two false-start penalties, forcing a field goal instead of a touchdown.
Quarterback Justin Herbert has struggled out of the gate this season, already throwing four interceptions through three games. With 5:14 left against Buffalo, Herbert threw his only interception of the day, and the Bills made him pay. Allen hit DJ Moore for a 16-yard gain to set up first-and-goal, and James Cook punched it in to put Buffalo up by 11. Los Angeles added a late, meaningless field goal to close out the 24-16 defeat.
At 0-3 with a difficult six-game stretch ahead, the Chargers’ season looks all but over on paper. James, at least, isn’t reading it that way.
