Chicago’s Memorial Day weekend was some of the most violent days in recent memory, with at least 51 people shot, including 12 who were fatally shot.

The widespread gun violence occurred despite efforts to decrease bloodshed through dozens of “peacekeepers” patrolling the Windy City. reported that there had been 10 people shot and killed in Chicago on Saturday alone; this was only exceeded by three other days in the past decade – June 27th 2020 (10 killed), July 4th 2020 (11 killed), and May 31st 2020 (18 killed).

Tragically, a 2-year-old girl also became part of the tally when she reportedly found a gun and accidentally discharged it, shooting herself in the hand. She was transported to St. Francis Hospital in good condition.

On Saturday night a 14-year-old girl standing on a sidewalk with a group of people was grazed by a bullet but refused treatment. A person was even reportedly shot and killed near the West Side home of newly-elected Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson less than two blocks away on Saturday night as well.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker announced before Memorial Day weekend that there would be 30 “peacekeepers” sent into Chicago streets to try to stop crime as part of an initiative called Citywide Crisis Prevention and Response Unit (CPRU).

However, within hours of opening beaches for Memorial Day weekend celebrations gunfire broke out when two groups of teens confronted each other at North Avenue Beach, forcing officials to shut down the beach immediately after it opened up again post-lockdown restrictions due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Mayor Johnson also presented his plan for reducing violence earlier last week saying “My administration’s top priority is making sure there is comprehensive whole government strategy across our city…” although it appears these plans have yet to make an impact on the current situation or improve safety levels yet for city residents during Memorial Day weekend.

As rampant violence continues unabated in many parts of America’s cities such as Chicago, it remains unclear what solutions will help reduce these rates long term; but liberal policies and the leftist ideology does not appear to be helping.
