The American Constitution Society has launched a video campaign called “The Oath Project,” featuring actors Jamie Lee Curtis, Robert De Niro, Noah Wyle, and Martin Sheen reciting a pledge to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States.” The video, posted to the organization’s Instagram account, arrives ahead of the midterm elections.
The clip opens with each participant identifying themselves by name, including retired U.S. Army Colonel Dr. Isaiah Ike Wilson III and former federal appeals judge J. Michael Luttig. Martin Sheen is introduced by his birth name, Ramón Gerard Estévez.
Each person then delivers a portion of the pledge before the footage cuts to the next speaker, who continues the sentence. Together, the group states: “And I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. That I will continue to bear true faith and allegiance to the same, and that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion.”
Curtis closes the video by saying, “I am proud to affirm my oath to the Constitution,” after which the full group appears together to add, “And I hope you will, too.”
The wording closely tracks the oath of office administered to members of Congress, federal officials, military personnel, and naturalized citizens, though the exact phrasing differs slightly across those contexts. Notably, the video does not include the phrase “So help me God,” which appears in each of the standard versions of that oath.
The American Constitution Society’s Instagram caption describes the effort as tied to Constitution Day: “This Constitution Day, we’re launching The Oath Project — a nonpartisan invitation to record and share an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. These participants are adding their voices. We hope you’ll add yours.”
The caption further encourages the public to participate: “Take the oath on your own or with your community, make it your own, and invite others to join you.”
