A “career criminal” is now facing serious federal charges in Minnesota. He allegedly embarked on an armed carjacking spree, which culminated in a tragic crash. This incident resulted in the deaths of two young women and left a child severely injured.

Edward Tiki Arrington, also known by the alias Troy Mike Payton, is the man in question. Prosecutors allege that he attempted multiple carjackings, succeeding in one. It was during this crime spree that he reportedly commandeered a Black Volkswagen Passat at gunpoint.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota shared details of the incident. Arrington’s reckless drive against traffic through North Minneapolis set off a police pursuit. Officers tried to stop him, but he sped toward downtown Minneapolis, evading capture.

The harrowing chase reached its peak at the intersection of Penn Avenue and Olson Memorial Boulevard. Arrington allegedly ran a red light, crashing into a blue Ford Focus. This collision resulted in the deaths of Marisa Ardys Casebolt and Liberty Borg, both just 25 years old.

Tragically, in the back seat of the Focus was a 6-year-old boy. He sustained severe injuries, including bilateral femur fractures and a traumatic brain injury. Prosecutors confirmed that one of the women killed was the child’s mother.

“Two young women should be alive today,” lamented acting U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson. “Their lives were cut short by a senseless crime.” He expressed his weariness of the ongoing violence, emphasizing that Minnesota deserves peace.

Arrington’s criminal actions extended beyond the initial carjacking. After stealing the Passat, he allegedly returned to his original vehicle. He transferred his two dogs and then threatened another driver with his gun.

He didn’t stop there, reportedly targeting a pedestrian on a sidewalk. The pedestrian was threatened at gunpoint, with Arrington demanding to know where her guns were. However, she was released unharmed, and Arrington fired a shot from the car as he fled.

Arrington’s criminal record is extensive. It includes state convictions for assault and gun offenses, as well as a federal conviction for drug distribution in 2009. Given these charges, he faces significant prison time if convicted.

Federal authorities charged him with carjacking and discharging a firearm during a violent crime. These charges carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years and could extend to life imprisonment. Carjacking resulting in death is a crime that can warrant the death penalty.

In addition to federal charges, Arrington faces charges in Hennepin County District Court. These include three counts of fleeing a police officer, all classified as felonies. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara condemned Arrington’s actions in strong terms.

“This violent suspect had an extensive criminal history,” Chief O’Hara stated. He emphasized the suspect’s disregard for human life and the risk he posed to the public. O’Hara expressed gratitude for the collaboration with the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Marisa Ardys Casebolt. She leaves behind a partner and two young children, aged two years and nine months. The page describes her as a loving mother whose children were her world.

The community is grappling with the loss of these two young women. Borg had recently shared joyful photos of her son on his first day of school. This tragic event has left a deep scar on their families and friends.

Such senseless acts of violence are a stark reminder of the challenges society faces. The pursuit of justice for these victims is paramount. The community hopes for a future where peace prevails over violence.
