A 29-year-old Brazilian nurse died Wednesday from what her husband described as an allergic reaction to shrimp, just 11 days after the couple married, during the final stop of their European honeymoon in Leiria, Portugal.

Amanda Nascimento married Tiago Nascimento on Oct. 10. The newlyweds traveled to Europe afterward, visiting the Vatican before arriving in Leiria, a historic city in central Portugal.

The couple went to a restaurant for lunch, where Amanda ate shrimp and other seafood, Tiago told Brazilian newspaper Metropoles. Amanda’s brother-in-law told Brazilian outlet G1 that she was allergic to shrimp and believed restaurant staff had told her the dish she ordered contained only fish.

“She ate a little and we went for a walk around the city, we went to a bookstore,” Tiago recalled. “And then, two hours later, she had an allergic reaction, around 4:30 pm (Portugal time).”

Amanda was rushed to a hospital in Leiria, but doctors there could not provide the care she needed. She was transferred roughly 49 miles north to Coimbra University Hospital. She suffered cardiac arrest and died before reaching that facility, Tiago said.

The couple had been scheduled to fly back to Brazil on Friday.

Tiago wrote on social media that their wedding day was “the happiest day of our lives — a dream come true.” He continued: “You were as beautiful as ever. We only had 11 days as husband and wife; we were still on our honeymoon.”

“We had built a life together, and I will never forget the affectionate, sweet, incredible, and humble woman you were — always so thoughtful and organized. My heart is in pieces,” he wrote.

Tiago described his wife as “an extraordinary person, a sweet, humble woman who always cared about everyone.” He added: “She loved her profession and was very Catholic. She passed away doing what she loved most, which was traveling.”

Amanda had worked since May 2025 as a nurse in the intensive care unit at Mantevida Hospital in Brazil’s Federal District. The hospital said in a statement: “Her presence, her commitment, and her humanity remain in the memory of those who knew her and those who were cared for by her.”
