President Joe Biden drew attention at an LGBTQ+ leadership event in Washington, D.C., where a slip of the tongue and a forceful closing plea for action dominated the moment, sparking Republican criticism about competence and political focus as he accepted an advocacy award.

During the speech Biden stumbled over his words and delivered a line that immediately circulated: “We’re the United States of Amerigotit” after urging activists and officials to press on. The gaffe came while he was trying to rally the crowd, and it quickly became the focal point for critics who say it undercuts the message. Conservatives seized on the misstep as evidence the president is not in command of his delivery or his message.

He had framed the address as a call to keep pushing for rights and recognition, insisting people must not give up on the effort to secure equality for LGBTQ Americans. “We just have to get up. As long as we keep the faith … and remember who the hell we are. We’re the United States of Amerigotit, that’s who we are! We’re the U.S.!” Biden declared, mixing urgency with an awkward moment that opponents labeled symptomatic of a deeper problem. Republicans argue that rhetorical stumbles like this distract from the substantive debates the country actually needs.

Biden also spoke about constitutional protection as central to the fight he wants to lead, repeating a refrain meant to resonate beyond the event. “All of us are dismayed by the present state of the union,” he added. “This is no time to give up. It’s time to get up. Get up and fight back. Get up. Continue to fight. And what’s the fight all about? … it’s about protecting the Constitution. It’s about protecting the Constitution.”

He leveled a pointed critique at former President Donald Trump and his base, framing them as forces trying to twist the movement into something menacing. “Donald Trump and the MAGA republicans are trying to distort and derail our fight for equality,” he said. “They’re trying to turn it into something scary, something sinister. But folks, it’s really not about anything that’s all that complicated. At its core, it’s about making every American given the opportunity to be treated with basic decency, dignity, and respect they all deserve. That’s what every single American deserves, every American.”

At the event Biden was handed the Chris Abele Impact Award for work on LGBTQ+ rights, a symbolic nod to the administration’s policy record that his allies emphasize. The award is named after board member Chris Abele from LGBTQ+ Victory Action, and the ceremony served both as recognition and as a platform for a broader political pitch. Republicans say awarding political trophies at advocacy gatherings only sharpens partisan divides and proves the party is turning governance into coaching sessions for loyal constituencies.

Conservative voices are using the episode to question whether the president should be the central face of a movement that depends on clear messaging and steady leadership. They view the gaffe and the speech’s broad political thrust as a reminder that competence matters when the country faces real constitutional and cultural disputes. Rather than a harmless slip, many see it as a moment that will fuel arguments about accountability and the direction of national conversation.
