Ben Stiller’s attempt to promote his latest entry in the Fockers comedy franchise ran straight into a wall of online backlash, with social media users flooding his announcement post to declare they have no intention of seeing it.
Stiller took to X on Monday to hype the new film, titled “Focker In-Law,” writing simply, “Time to get Focked up.” The movie, released by Universal Pictures, co-stars Robert De Niro and Ariana Grande and follows Stiller’s character’s son bringing home a new girlfriend, played by Grande, to meet the Focker family.
Instead of excitement, the post drew a wave of users citing the political activism of Stiller and De Niro as their reason for skipping the film.
“You couldn’t pay me to watch it.”
Another user predicted the movie would flop, dubbing it “Flopper In-Law” — a joke Stiller himself replied to, writing, “Ouch. Good pun though.”
Other responses were far more pointed about the stars’ political statements. One user wrote: “This will be one of those go woke, go broke moments. Loved the previous movies, but you’ve tainted viewing with your ideological views and screeching at Trump.”
Another claimed to speak broadly for viewers skipping the release: “I speak for ALL Americans when I say, we WON’T be watching.”
“Focker In-Law” is scheduled to hit theaters on November 25.
