Bank records made public on Dec. 4 revealed that President Joe Biden had received payments from one of his son’s businesses beginning in September 2018.
The records were obtained and released by the U.S. House of Representatives Oversight Committee.
The payments were made by Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, to his father from the Burisma Holdings gas company in Ukraine.
According to the documents, President Biden received payments from an LLC created by his son Hunter Biden totaling $3.5 million over a period of two years.
The money was paid in monthly installments of $83,333 and came from a series of foreign investors, including the Chinese energy firm CEFC and Ukrainian businessman Pavel Fuks.
The White House has said that Joe Biden was not involved in any business dealings with his son Hunter and that he did not benefit financially from their relationship. However, there have been calls for further investigation into the matter to ensure no impropriety occurred.
The payments have raised questions about potential conflicts of interest while Joe Biden was vice president and a point person for U.S.-Ukraine relations during the Obama administration.
In response to the revelations, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that Joe Biden had “never spoken to his son about his overseas business dealings,” and that he complied with all relevant tax laws. She also said there is “no evidence of any wrongdoing” on the part of Joe or Hunter Biden.
They indicated that former Vice President Biden had signed to receive a monthly payment of $1,380 from Owasco PC, which Hunter Biden owns.
“Payments from Hunter’s business entity to Joe Biden are now part of a pattern revealing Joe Biden knew about, participated in, and benefited from his family’s influence peddling schemes,” Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), chairman of the committee, said in a video statement.
The oversight committee made a statement on X.
