Apple TV’s sci-fi series “Dark Matter” wrapped its second season Thursday, Oct. 29, with no official renewal for a third season.
Season 2, Episode 10, titled “No Quiet Life,” aired at 9:00 p.m. ET and closed out a 10-episode run, matching the length of Season 1. As of the finale, Apple TV had not announced whether the show would return.
The season earned a Certified Fresh 82% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and producers have said they intend the story to run three seasons total.
Producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry told ScreenRant the creative team built the show with a trilogy in mind from the start. “We designed Season 2, and when we were pitching it to Apple, and we were going through the process of getting it greenlit we designed the whole show to be three seasons. We see it as a trilogy, and that would be such an amazing opportunity to get to end something on your own terms and have a real round and complete story. And we’re very hopeful that that’s something that happens,” she said.
Cast member Jimmi Simpson, who plays Ryan, discussed what he’d want for his character in a potential third season during an interview with Decider. “Ryan’s been motivated by science his whole life. I would love to see him find a little bit of love. You want that for everybody, right? But especially a guy like Ryan who’s succeeded in so much except for that. He needs something better than the pavia in his life,” Simpson said, adding he’s rooting for a romance between Ryan and the character Amanda.
“As it stands, it’s clear that Amanda does and probably will eternally hold a bit of a candle for Jason. And I think Ryan observed that. He might have developed a quick crush, but then as soon as she sees Jason, he’s like, ‘Ah.’ So he’s biding his time. Ryan’s a very patient man, clearly. He can sit in other universes and just try and figure out stuff,” Simpson said.
No release date has been set for a potential Season 3, since the show has not been renewed. Season 1 and Season 2 were separated by a two-year gap, suggesting fans may face a similar wait if the show is picked up again.
Both seasons of “Dark Matter” are streaming now on Apple TV, which offers a seven-day free trial and a $14.99-per-month ad-free plan. A bundle with Peacock is also available starting at $14.99 per month.
