Diego de la Vega, once a key figure in Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign team, has now found himself in Colombia after over two decades of living in America without proper documentation.
In a world where rules and regulations can seem unclear, de la Vega made the choice to return to his roots, leaving behind the country he once called home. He shared his journey in a chat with Migrant Insider, expressing the bittersweet nature of his decision.
Reflecting on his life, de la Vega mentioned, “It feels like exile” as he settled into his new life abroad. Having arrived in the United States from Ecuador as a child, he had never left the country for 23 years. Now, with his wife by his side, he feels content with his choice, even though it meant leaving a significant chapter of his life behind.
The case of de la Vega has sparked conversations about his role within Ocasio-Cortez’s office, especially since DACA recipients aren’t allowed to occupy paid positions in congressional offices.
Despite the legal hurdles, de la Vega maintained a strong presence in political circles. He became an advocate for immigration reform after the disappointment of the 2010 DREAM Act, which failed to pass in the Senate by just five votes.
His journey in advocacy led him to work with immigrant rights organizations and later as a communications director for New York State Assembly member, Robert Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who is now the president and CEO of the New York State Dormitory Authority, shared his professional journey through LinkedIn, showcasing his commitment to public service.
In 2021, Ocasio-Cortez’s team brought de la Vega on board, eventually promoting him to deputy communications director. Ocasio-Cortez praised his contributions, stating, “Diego is amazing. We love him.” During his tenure, de la Vega emphasized the campaign’s transparency with voters, especially in New York City.
“We were always honest with voters in New York City,” he reflected, emphasizing the campaign’s dedication to engaging with constituents truthfully. According to de la Vega, the campaign didn’t shy away from discussing policy challenges, even though Republicans often stood as obstacles to reform.
Fox News Digital reached out to Ocasio-Cortez’s office for comment, but no response was received. Meanwhile, de la Vega voiced his dismay over the state of immigration reform in the U.S., noting that protections for undocumented immigrants have steadily weakened. He pointed out the missed opportunities during President Biden’s administration, which had control over both houses of Congress.
De la Vega’s experience in America was a mix of fear and hope. Growing up in New York, he enjoyed a good childhood but was always aware of the looming threat of deportation. Now, living in Colombia, he no longer has to worry about such fears, finding solace in the newfound freedom he has gained.
“It feels surreal to not be illegalized anymore,” he shared, appreciating the ability to move freely without the dread of deportation. His current life in Colombia offers a sense of fulfillment, even as he acknowledges the uncertainty of when he might return to the U.S.
While de la Vega’s future in America remains uncertain, he finds comfort in being home. The journey from living in the shadows to embracing a life of freedom in Colombia marks a significant change for him. His story serves as a reminder of the complexities and personal struggles tied to immigration in today’s world.
