AI Infrastructure Fuels American Construction Jobs, Restores Trades

The rush to build the physical systems that power artificial intelligence is already reshaping the job market, pumping demand into construction trades and energy work across the country. Data centers, power plants and supporting infrastructure need crews to prepare sites, run heavy equipment, pour concrete, wire systems and keep everything humming. That activity is creating steady, long-term roles that reach beyond software engineers and into blue-collar careers. Communities that train workers for these roles could see meaningful economic benefits.

Big tech and cloud providers are moving fast, and construction firms are racing to keep up. The buildout covers everything from site prep and foundations to massive electrical and cooling systems, so projects need many different skills at every stage. That variety means local contractors and specialized trade workers are suddenly in the spotlight. It also puts pressure on hiring pipelines that have been thin for years.

On the trades side, the demand is obvious on jobsites where heavy machinery and precise craft work meet. “For many years, there’s been a lack of focus just in general from what is the benefit of a career in the trades,” said Cole Renken, general manager of Merlo America. “It’s a very stable income, very stable lifestyle that you can provide for,” and that stability is exactly what some workers are looking for.

Forecasts show the scale of the opportunity: U.S. construction spending is projected to rise from $2.22 trillion in 2026 to $2.85 trillion by 2031, with industrial construction, which includes factories and data centers, expected to hit $684 billion by 2031. That represents a sizable slice of the overall market and reflects how much capital is flowing into infrastructure that supports cloud computing, AI, and 5G. Numbers like these translate into long-term project pipelines and repeat work for suppliers and contractors.

Projects of this size are logistical beasts, and they need heavy-equipment operators, site crews, logistics coordinators and materials handlers up front. As construction progresses, concrete crews, electricians, plumbers and HVAC specialists move in to build out the operational systems. Electrical roles, in particular, are likely to see sustained pressure because data centers rely on robust, redundant power systems. Those are not one-week jobs; they are complex, multi-phase efforts.

That complexity also means work continues after ribbon-cutting. “These are projects that can provide hundreds or thousands of jobs over many, many years,” Brittany Kaiser, CEO of Alpha Compute, told Fox News Digital. “It’s not a quick construction project.” Data centers are constantly evolving—adding capacity, swapping equipment, upgrading power and cooling—which keeps demand for technicians, maintenance crews and electricians steady.

Because many of the needed skills can be taught, companies and communities have options to grow local talent. “It’s jobs that can also be taught and trained,” Kaiser said. “So it’s very possible to engage with the community on education and training initiatives to allow people to get access to these higher paying jobs that they didn’t have a skill set for before.” Apprenticeships, community college programs and employer partnerships can bridge the gap.

Still, shortages in the trades are not new, and scale-up could strain the labor market even more as more facilities get greenlit. Renken noted that these shortages have hung around for much of his career and could deepen as the pipeline of projects grows. The reality is that adding capacity means recruiting, training and retaining workers in roles many young people and career-changers may not immediately consider.

The bigger picture is a reminder that advanced technology relies on real-world infrastructure and hands-on skills. “To me, it has been kind of an overshadowed market that hasn’t gotten the attention that it needs,” Renken said, pointing to trades that deserve more focus. If policymakers, educators and industry leaders align on training and incentives, the construction surge behind AI could become a reliable engine for middle-class careers and community investment.
