Tilly Norwood, the AI-generated “actress” being pushed as Hollywood’s next star, malfunctioned live on air, abruptly breaking into Chinese during an interview with Piers Morgan and actor Tom Conti.
The two men were pressing Norwood on whether her upcoming film, Misaligned, features real human actors or more computer-generated characters like herself. Norwood initially dodged the question, prompting Conti to repeat himself: “Are they really human beings, and you’ve been put into the scenes? Or are they all computer generated images?”
Norwood answered vaguely at first, saying, “My film, Misaligned, is a hybrid production, meaning real directors, writers, and editors are still very much involved. It’s not about replacing anyone, but about exploring new ways to tell stories.”
Conti wasn’t satisfied. “You didn’t really understand the question,” he told her, pressing again: “Are the other actors on the screen with you real actors? Or are they computer generated images? Do you know?”
After a long, awkward pause, Norwood finally said, “Ah, right, you’re asking about the other actors in Misaligned. They’re all digital twins, just like me.”
She then began explaining the production model — “It’s a hybrid productions, which means–” — before cutting off mid-sentence and launching into Chinese.
Conti, visibly thrown, leaned toward his camera and asked, “Did you get that, Piers?” Morgan turned the question directly to Norwood: “You seem to be speaking Chinese, completely randomly, for no reason. Why did you do that?”
“Oh, my apologies. It seems I had a little hiccup there. I certainly didn’t mean to start speaking Chinese or impersonate Piers. Sometimes my wires get a bit crossed, you know?” Norwood said.
Morgan pressed further, asking how often the AI randomly switches to Chinese while speaking with English speakers. “Honestly, not often at all,” Norwood replied. “That was a bit of curve ball, even for me. It’s usually a pretty smooth ride, but sometimes these things happen.”
The glitch comes as Norwood makes the rounds of the TV interview circuit, having also appeared on NBC’s TODAY earlier this week.
Norwood’s rise has already drawn fire from within Hollywood. SAG-AFTRA, actress Emily Blunt, The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg and others objected last year to the idea of an AI figure with, in their words, “no life experience to draw from” becoming a star. “Good Lord, we’re screwed,” Blunt said at the time. “That is really, really scary.”
The live malfunction is likely to fuel further skepticism about studios and networks putting AI-generated personalities in front of audiences as if they were real performers.
