This week’s Dear Abby column, written by Jeanne Phillips, features two reader letters touching on family conflict, one of which was submitted by a writer identified only as “Exasperated Uncle in Ohio.”

In the first letter, a woman described a holiday dinner where a relative with a history of racist remarks made disgusting and violent comments in front of her children. She and her husband had warned the family beforehand that they would leave if it happened again. When it did, her husband confronted the relative, made polite excuses to others, and the family packed up and drove two hours home rather than stay the night as planned. Other relatives have since accused the husband of ruining the dinner and have called repeated family meetings demanding he apologize.

Phillips sided firmly with the couple. “That dinner was far from ‘perfectly nice.’ Your husband was not out of line, and I applaud you for taking a stand,” she wrote, adding that the extended family became “complicit in the hate speech” by acting as a willing audience. She advised against attending future gatherings with the group unless they promise it won’t happen again.

The second letter came from the Ohio writer, who described a decades-long pattern with a nephew in his 40s who rarely returns calls but becomes overwhelmed and “emotionally draining” during family crises, unlike his level-headed sister. The uncle noted the nephew’s mental health struggles and a wife he described as possibly controlling, and said the family is at its “wits’ end” despite repeated promises from the nephew to stay in touch.

Phillips told the uncle the pattern is unlikely to change, and recommended letting the niece deliver family news going forward while limiting the length of draining phone calls with the nephew.
